Taking too long to colonize AND pinning in jars

Hello all, as usual TIA for any wisdom.
I’m getting pinning in jars PLUS it’s taking forever for my jars to colonize. Clearly I’m doing something wrong. I’m hoping for two things from this post. 1) Suggestions for what I did wrong so I can do better next time (hopefully), and 2) advice about what to do with these jars, given that they’re pining and still not colonized.
Background: These jars were inoculated on July 27. I was trying to follow the Updated PF-Tek Guide (2023 Edition) here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086
The jars have been on a shelf in a moderately lit bedroom at temps ranging from the mid 70s to low 80s. Humidity has generally been in the mid 60s or thereabouts. No direct sunlight, but yes indirect sunlight, especially in the late afternoon.
Again, thanks for any advice.

Your jars appear fully colonized to me, except for the top which I'm assuming is just a thicker-than-usual verm layer.
Is the top indeed just a verm layer per the tek? If so, these jars have probably been ready to birth for quite a while.
If it isn't the case that the top is just a verm layer, then I'm at a loss as to why everything would colonize except the top, other than contams in the top areas only, which would be peculiar but not impossible.
Shoot back with more info on your process and maybe someone can be of more help than me. Good luck, man!

Yes this a common thing for first timers with pf tek. The cake shrinks as it gets colonized which lets some of the verm drop down making it look like uncolonized cake still.
Even if some of it wasn’t colonized on top you could cut it off.
At least you’ve got shrooms already right. Time to dunk roll and fruit those babies.

Damnit, I'm glad you replied. I think I was probably feeling more confused than the op. 😅

That shape jar, even tho it is half pint, is not the best to use. The 1/2 pint wide mouth is short and fat letting it colonize better. I did the same thing because I couldn't get the wide mouth version. Going forward you should get the wide mouth ones if you are going to do PF Tek again. if not those are good to do small run grain/agar tests or small batches of LC in.

Thank you! Much better news than I was afraid I would get. I'll do that. I assume I need to pick these pins off before I dunk and roll, right? Are they good for consumption, or should I just toss them?

Thanks for the advice on jars. I'll get some half-pint wide-mouths going forward. Appreciate it!

If you're planning on dunking and rolling, then yeah, I'd pick the pins off. If not, you could birth the cake and let them ride.
They're definitely fine to eat, though. And will probably pack quite a punch.

So the first time I just took a quick look at one of the pictures, after checking out all of them it’s definitely not just verm dropping down.
It looks like they may have a little bacteria going on near the tops based on the sudden end of the myc and how it’s kinda forming a thick ridge there.
I would cut the bare parts off just in case. It does look like there’s at least some mycelium throughout but not full colonization at the top.

My daughter often says things like, “I am such an idiot.” I try to discourage her when she does. We all make mistakes, and that kind of negative self-talk just isn’t helpful. But damned if I don’t feel like saying that myself now…
The reason the tops of the jars weren’t colonizing was because the tek I was using said to have a layer of dry verm up there to act as a barrier between the myc and the rest of the world. I put that layer in myself, and promptly forgot about it, and waited and waited wondering why the jars weren’t colonizing.
I’m such an… well never mind.
Thanks all for the advice, I birthed the jars and they were indeed fully colonized (see pic below). There was one jar which was mostly brown and kind of slimy so I noped on that one and tossed it, but the other four seemed fine. (Let me know if you disagree.) They’re soaking for 24 hours, then I’m going to try Mateja’s Water Tub tek here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26601054
I pulled the pins off, tossed the small ones, and rinsed the rest off. Apparently I got 21g wet. They’re in the dehydrator now @160 for 24hrs. I’m assuming the discoloration there is an artifact of them having pinned in vitro and is not a concern? Again, let me know if not.
Thanks again all, I’m back to being cautiously optimistic!

Those fruits look fine, enjoy! Cakes look good too, Mateja's water tub is a great choice
