Magic mushroom shop says police, landlord turning up heat on business September 15, 2023 - Sudbury Star
Shroom World's manager says police are wasting taxpayers’ money by cracking down on psilocybin when it’s other substances driving street crime in Ottawa.
The manager of two Shroom World stores says he’s being pressured by his landlords and the police to close even though there’s little evidence psychedelic mushrooms are creating problems in Ottawa.
Brian Patterson manages stores on Richmond Road and Rideau Street, which first opened two years ago.
During the past week, he said, the police issued notices to their landlords, demanding they cease any illegal activity on their premises. The landlords, in turn, told Patterson they would have to leave.
“Our landlords are basically telling us, ‘You have to pack up and go,’” Patterson says. “And we say, ‘Why? We’re not doing anything wrong.’ I understand it’s in a grey zone, but how come other stores, like those in Vancouver and Toronto, are not getting any pressure? Why just us?”
The police, he said, are wasting taxpayers’ money by cracking down on psilocybin when it’s other substances – fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, alcohol – that are driving street crime in Ottawa.
“We’re actually helping people overcome their depression and move away from their pills and all of the other negative stuff they’re taking,” he argued.
Psilocybin, meanwhile, is on Schedule III of Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. It is illegal to traffic, produce, import or possess without an exemption.
With respect to local psilocybin dispensaries, the Ottawa police describe their approach as measured and proactive, involving “education, deterrence and enforcement.”
Patterson said the company has hired a lawyer to help them stay in business.
Originally from Vancouver, Patterson, 29, said he has been around mushrooms all of his adult life and has seen their medicinal power first-hand.
“We have lawyers, doctors, teachers. You’d be shocked to see how many people in professions, with careers, actually come in and try our products, and are helped by them,” he said.
“I guarantee you in the next two or three years, mushrooms will be legalized. So, we’re hoping to get the message to Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau, and tell him, ‘Listen, you did a good thing by legalizing marijuana. There were no big problems. So why not do the same thing for mushrooms?’”

Good fucking question. If I opened up one of these places in Alberta it would be shut down within an hour. There is one criminal code for all of Canada but its not equally enforced across the nation, that is bullshit.

While it's not technically freedom, to be told where you have to go, you could still research where is most permissive, or who is ready to compromise, before opening up shop.
That would be the deciding, legal precedent. (Don't ruin it for the rest of us.)
Otherwise, the landlord is probably subject to civil asset forfeiture, so is forced to consider the issue as just-business.
