The story of my life. Benadryl worked for a few weeks. I really don't have a problem falling asleep. My problem is staying asleep. Now if I take benadryl I can't fall asleep (people don't believe me when I say that if I take benadryl I can't fall asleep).

Years ago I took Lunesta once and it was horrible. I felt very drowsy and unable to sleep for what seemed an eternity. The doctor prescribed me trazodone a coupleofyearsago. It worked when I took it but then I couldn't fall asleep without taking it. I freak out at the idea of becoming dependent on a drug (even though my doctor says it is not habit forming). I don't take anything now. I fall asleep quickly but wake up around 2 or 3 am. I get up at 4 am, go to the gym at 5 am. Sometimes I would take a nap right before work or midday (if I can do that). It really sucks but I don't want to medicate.

I wake up to piss 2-3 times a night, never really feel rested during the day.

A couple years ago I did a brutal 12 hour hike on 0 hours of sleep (tried to sleep in my car at the trailhead the night before, didn't work). After the hike my head hit the pillow and next thing I knew it was the next morning, I slept through the whole night. I felt like I was a completely different person, all my usual brain fog and even anxiety/depression were gone for the whole day, I was clear headed and energized.

Only time I've felt like that since as far back as I can remember, it sucks to know what I'm missing out on all because I can't sleep. I've tried every trick in the book and still haven't found a way to sleep through the night

I fall asleep easy because I'm so exhausted and I'm so exhausted because I wake up between 1 and 3. Wake at 1am and it's a long, long day of too tired to do anything. Anymore now if I sleep to 3am it's a good night of sleep.

I've been trying to learn how to nap. Bought a sleep mask and that has helped but it is still an ongoing battle to get sleep.

Sometimes I get really bad insomnia. It doesnt happen often but when it doesn, Im up all night.

A list of things Ive learned that help or interfere with sleeping.

1) Being Active during the Day.

If I do little/no activities during the day, I can have a lot of trouble sleeping. Staying both mentally and physically active during your waking hours is so important. Trying to sleep when you are mentally or physically tired is the easiest way to sleep.

2) Seasons/Ambient Temperature

I get pretty terrible sleep in the Summer. The early morning sunlight, the hot morning sunlight, it is awful for my sleep health. I usually get my best sleep in the Fall or Winter (as long as its not too cold). I recently read an article on sleep and it said that an ambient temp of around 65F is optimal for sleeping. I use a black cotton t-shirt over my face to cover my eyes. This really helps with sunlight. I highly recommend getting one. Try to sleep during the coolest parts of the day. :cool2: It can be equally tough to sleep when its too cold. Ive learned that one from camping outdoors at music festivals/camping trips :sadyes:

3) Plans for the Next Day/Anxiety

If you have some big plan the next day, or perhaps you are worrying about something, that can cause some pretty awful sleep. This one is tough to avoid but I try to do self-soothing techniques in order to try to sleep. Telling myself "I need to sleep, its getting late!" usually doesnt work as it stresses me out even more. Learning how to relax your body and mind helps a lot.

4) Noise

Sometimes, my noisy neighbours wake me up. Its really fucking annoying. Again, tough to avoid but keeping some sleeping earplugs nearby or a pair of noise-cancelling headphones can really help with this.

5) Hydration & Urination

This one is tricky! First, I always take a piss right before heading to bed. Timing is critical. Next, i drink a small amount of water before bed. Maybe a quarter of a glass. The trick is to drink enough water where you dont wake up from thirst but not too much that having to take a piss wakes you up. I usually lean on the side of slightly dehydrated to help with sleep unless Im in a really arid place (like camping in the desert).

6) Clean Body

If i feel dirty, i cannot sleep. Sometimes a shower before bed is necessary. Showers tend to wake me up so it takes longer to fall asleep but its worth it. Also, blowing your nose clean is real important for breathing while your sleeping.

7) Drugs

Drugs keep me awake: weed, shrooms, Acid, alcohol, caffeine, etc. All of them. Take drugs early so they dont keep you up.

8) Libido

If I am overly horny, i cannot sleep. I'll lay there and fantasize in an active-mind way. I think we all know what needs to be done to take care of this one

9) Sunburns/bodily injuries

This one is pretty obvious. If you are in pain because of a sunburn or bodily injury, it can be tough to sleep. Its hard to sleep when you are in pain. At this point, pain relievers are a good idea.

10) Safety

This one is a bit abstract. If you are sleeping in a place that you feel "unsafe", you probably wont sleep well. Ties in with the "anxiety" issue as mentioned in #3. Its important to feel safe in the place you are sleeping. If you dont feel safe, you cant relax and you will not sleep well.

Hope this list helps ya out

Do you feel well-rested the next day, even though you woke up at 3 AM?  Maybe your body is trying to tell you that you don't need that much sleep.  A lot of people can get away with only 5, 6 hours of sleep.

My sleep quality is usually very good, I hit the pillow and minutes later I am out cold.

I find that I only have trouble sleeping if I napped earlier that day.

I did til I took a few Oz of bud & infused coconut oil with it, I take a capsule full an hour before bed & sleep great. I bought some pot gummies too from a dispensary that had melatonin in em & the 2 together kicked my ass but no problem sleeping til 10am or later.

For me the ability to sleep through the night depends on whether I worry about stuff or not. This also influences how long it takes me to fall asleep. It doesn't matter how exhausted I am from the previous day.

Currently I struggle with getting a good night's sleep.
Last night I went to bed at 09:00pm and I was still awake by midnight thinking about things, which is when I decided to take 12mg of melatonin (this is something I try to avoid). Half an hour later I fell asleep and woke up again at 03:00am. Was awake till 03:30am, fell asleep again, woke up at 06:00am. Since then I am in bed don't really feel the energy to get up. It's about 08:00am.

Need to force myself to get up now, make myself a strong coffee and start home office based work. From experience I can tell that I'll feel shitty the whole day.

We've been taught that it's abnormal to not sleep through the night. We think of it as a problem.  I recently learned about "biphasic sleep" patterns. Prior to artificial lighting, biphasic sleep was common.  Aristotle talked about biphasic sleep and in ancient Greece it was known as "first sleep" and "second sleep." As artificial lighting became more common, humans adopted a monophasic sleep schedule.

Below is one description of biphasic sleep

Biphasic sleep is a sleep pattern in which a person splits their sleep into two main segments per day. They may sleep longer at night, and then take a nap during the day. Or, they may split their nighttime sleep up into two segments. Biphasic sleep is also referred to as segmented or bimodal sleep.

Happens to me most nights not always at the same time. Most times I get back to sleep easily. If I don't and want to I lay on my back and move my muscles as if I'm walking, but so little movement, as close to none as possible, works well almost always for me to get back to sleep.

This works for me. If I do not open my eyes and stay still, my body usually cannot help but to fall back asleep.  If I open my eyes and stretch and look around, I generally can NOT get back to sleep quickly.

In talking to people, many are very angry about their sleep habits.  Note the word "hellish" to describe waking up at night, in this thread title.  The more upset you are about what your body does, the more you suffer.

I don't wake up exactly at the same time, but also have difficulty sleeping through the night these days.
Was checking some basic insomnia treatments on canada drugs website and probably will order myself some.
It doesn't happen every night, but sometimes I can stay awake for hours and just stare at the ceiling.

I always think that like that, biphasic sleep is my way to go, good to learn this. But problem is I work from 8 to 17...Is it better sleep for 3 hours for 17 to 20 and 04 to 07 and this way may be better for weight control...

Thanks for sharing,
