Re-PCing grain bags?
    #28468254 - 09/13/23 09:52 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

I got ten 5lbs rye grain bags off a friend, I waited a few weeks before innoculating 6 of them. They all got wet spot. I still have 4... it's been nearly a month now tho. They smell fine, but I figure I should probably resterilize them? If that's possible? I have a 23qt presto. Has anyone ever done this? Is there a standard procedure? I tried using the search bar and couldn't find any info.

Did you open up the bags to smell them? If so they're almost certainly no good.

I've inoculated jars after a month with good success, but I've never had as good of luck inoculating older bags.

You could try re-sterilizing them, but sometimes the bags don't hold up. I really think your best best is to just start some new grains. You already have the Presto PC, everything else is pretty inexpensive by comparison.

Nah, I just smelled them thru the patch. I know it'd be easiest just to start over but I can't bring myself to pitch 20 pounds of rye without at least trying to inoculate it. I've got plenty of LC.

If you have plenty of LC then go for it.

How did you inoculate the other bags? Your LC might be the source of contamination if the grain looked OK beforehand.

Nah, I know it was the grains. That's why I'm gonna try to PC it again. I used 6 different LCs all fresh from a vendor and they all came out clean after transfer. All the grain bags had the same wet spot.

I already tossed em all, there was no visible bacterial growth or anything. Just no mycelium growth, after several weeks. I knew something was up when I saw nothing in the first week. I only used 7cc of LC but still, not even a trickle of mycelium. The grain slowly became soggy coupled with a sour smell so strong you could smell it thru the patch.

Imma just go ahead and put the other 4 bags in the PC and then use more LC this time and hope for the best.
