Bill to allow Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes in California heads to governor's desk September 12, 2023 - Bay City News
A bill by a state legislator from San Francisco to allow Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes in California has been approved by the Legislature and is headed to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk.
Assembly Bill 374, authored by state Assemblymember Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, passed the Assembly with a 66-9 vote Monday, Sept. 11, after previously being approved by the state Senate.
The legislation would allow local jurisdictions to authorize cannabis retailers to prepare and serve non-cannabis food and beverages and to sell tickets to live performances.
Haney's office in a statement said the bill "will allow struggling cannabis businesses to diversify away from the marijuana-only 'dispensary' model and will bring much-needed tourist dollars into empty downtowns."
Haney said, "To be clear, we're not saying that coffee shops should be allowed to sell cannabis. We're saying that cannabis shops should be allowed to sell coffee. It shouldn't be illegal for an existing cannabis business to move away from only selling marijuana and instead have the opportunity to grow, and create jobs by offering coffee or live jazz."
If signed by Newsom, the bill would take effect at the start of 2024, when local governments could then create regulations for the cafes. According to Haney's office, West Hollywood has already passed legislation to create such a licensing system, while San Francisco legislators are currently working on a similar system.

Idk all the details of the bill or if it has negatives this article isn't talking about but that sounds good. Consumption lounges are needed in a lot of states still but I'm sure theyre not the biggest money makers. Being able to sell other food and coffee/tea/all kinds or drinks would be a good thing.

Consumption lounges or legal places to consume cannabis are very much needed. In my state, it's legal recreationally but there's pretty much nowhere legal to smoke it besides your house. Your backyard is even an gray area depending on where you live.

There is a consumption lounge in the next town over from where I am. I haven't been to it yet myself but it is right on the main drag of the town. The place has a cannabis store, and I believe in a separate part of the building/through a different door is where one can light up inside.
Pretty sure it's kinda like a "sports bar" of sorts, big TVs with the big games/fights playing, but obviously doesn't serve alcohol...and I'm not sure if they sell any food or drink in there either?
Some music events there I think, and the place can be rented out for private events.
I've heard of some cannabis-restaurants in the LA/Southern California area.
If I had the $, one of the things I've wanted to do is open up a place that doesn't sell cannabis products but is a bring your own herb/extracts & allows consumption inside/on the property. Have some volcano-vaporizers and e-nail dab rigs that people can use...Have a quality sound system inside, cozy mood, host DJs/bands/musicians, art gallery area, sell good food & drink.

Its a hard sell when we just spent the last 30 years banning tobacco smoke from everywhere. If I was a smoker of tobacco and they ban indoor smoking of that but allow weed I would be pissed
