just checked on one of my tubs and say this cool mutant! looks like the caps fused together. is this something worth trying to close? if so how long do you have to clone? i don’t have agar or anything or know how to but the more i get into this hobby the more i want to learn and i think this is pretty cool

I wouldn't call it a mutation per say. I see this every so often when growing space is tight.
As for if it's "worth cloning", that's entirely up to you, but I wouldn't expect to get any more fused capped mushrooms than normal out of that clone. I suppose you could take the long route and breed a variety that tends to have more fused caps, but it's a much longer project.
I've cloned mushrooms at all stages of growth, but I think most people would recommend cloning sooner. I usually do it right at harvest time, which for me is just before/after the veil breaks. Depending on how quickly you can get supplies I think you could clone this in time if you wanted to.

that definitely makes sense considering how tight this cluster is. thank you for the link also i just saved it. also since i have someone here on a post…these are “pe #7” and i keep hearing to wait until the stems are marshmallow squishy to harvest or lumpy near the cap but i have quite a few with torn veils and it looks like they’ve dropped spores but even on some very small ones so i’m confused on when to harvest this strain.

I say pick them. Even teeny tiny mushrooms can open their veils and drop spores. Take a look at this guy I harvested a few days ago.
I'm no strain expert, but I've never used the stems to check for "ripeness" I just go by the veil

Yo, I just happened to run across another post by a TC, and apparently PE will continue to grow after the veil breaks.
Don't pick em yet, and sorry for the bad advice!

well that’s the thing! that’s what i’ve seen all over the place but the dark coloring under the caps is making me nervous that they dropped spores already. i made another post specifically about that so i’m just hoping some expert can reply with reassuring advice lol

I haven't grown PE yet, but people always say you should harvest them when they are marshmallow soft. The veils don't help much, kind of like KSSS.
PE isn't supposed to drop very many spores, so it shouldn't be a big deal to let it keep going.

is there any benefit to letting it grow after spores drop aside from just having a larger fruit? considering the other signs people have said to look for before harvesting a PE strain aren’t really here yet but it looks like spores dropped (not much tho which adds up to what you’ve just stated)

I've had the same kind of thoughts about harvesting PE. I know they'll keep growing way past the veil breaking, but I still question when the optimal time to harvest for potency is. I've allowed some to grow wayyy too long and their potency to weight ratio was horrible. But like anyone else, I don't wanna harvest too soon, wasting potential medicine.
I don't believe there's a concensus about PE regarding harvesting for optimal potency, but I hope someone can kinda help with this question as well. That being said, I will go for the veil breaking as my usual sign for harvesting, as long as it isn't a tiny fruit. And I'll use the "firm marshmallow" test for blobs.
