General question. I was out for the day,got home late. When u got up this morning, the veils had broke and the caps had dropped spores. All around the fruits that had obviously dropped their seed, the cake is a black color. Is this cake ruined?

Spores are the fungus' reproductive mechanism.
It wouldn't make sense if the thing designed to keep them alive killed them.
Spores are just Spores. They won't hurt your cake...

Agreed, that they won’t hurt the cake; however it may cause overlay depending on the strain / variety.
In which case. Just dunk and roll again.

In all my years here I've never heard of overlay on cubes...

Which is why I stated strain / variety.
Overlay for cubes can happen if the conditions are not ideal.
It’s not unheard of…

Colonizing the top layer isn't overlay. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23021406#23021406

Cubensis is a species tho, so I'm confused. There is no variety of cube that produces overlay. Only other species like pans or Nats will actually overlay

Species and strain to me are interchangeable, idk.
Varietals of cube is what I consider varietal...
Not attempting to argue.
Over lay happens with cubes when the conditions aren’t met properly and are constantly fluctuating between humidity levels and cleanliness.

Do you have any threads or pics with cubes overlaying? Haven’t been here that long but haven’t seen anything except them natties or other exotics do it.

This is the most recent one that I’ve seen as cubes when the conditions are met properly.
Here ya go bro.

I still wouldn't call that overlay, looks more like a massive bacterial infection followed by poor conditions. But to each their own.

Spores getting on stuff is messy.
Once the veils have opened and the caps have dumped most of their loads, then you've pretty much missed your shot at using them to take a clean print or swab.
I'm perhaps in the minority, as I don't like to intentionally let my fruits go to full maturity. My personal sweet spot is when the veils start to appear in that little tufted ring around the base of the cap, but the cap is still shaped like one of the spires on the kremlin. But shit happens, and I'm not too picky about it. I'll collect anything from immature pins all the way through to fully opened caps, as long as there's no detectable rot or senescence. It's really just what ends up being most convenient/expedient.
Aside from all that, there's nothing to worry about from some spores dropping. Even if you were running some crazy isolate and worried about spores resetting the genetic clock, they wouldn't realistically have enough time to overtake the established mycelium before the substrate was through.
-------------------- Beware of advice- even this.
