Nested Private Messages Using PHP Encryption
    #28454068 - 08/31/23 07:04 PM (4 months, 25 days ago)

When sending an encrypted reply to an encrypted message...and receiving a subsequent reply from the recipient which quotes my encrypted reply...I cannot see what I previously wrote. Is there a workaround to this? I tried sending myself my own reply to see if it could be decrypted, but it failed. The way the messages get nested makes it impossible to remember what was communicated.

Yeah you're right, I've noticed this too and made a mental note about it but I never got around to actually fixing it. It's actually complicated by a few considerations, for example someone shouldn't be able to quote the plaintext of an encrypted message in an unencrypted reply. But it can all be figured out.

No matter what though, you won't be able to decrypt the quoted messages since they're encrypted with the recipient's key, not yours. I'll think about the best way to fix this, but it will only take effect on messages sent after the fix is implemented, unfortunately.

The only workaround I've found so far is to make sure you are saving a copy of the encypted reply to your 'Sent' folder. Perhaps this could be a default setting when sending encrypted PM's. Otherwise, I would think it might get complicated addressing the nesting issue. I don't know enough about the coding to be sure of this, however. I trust that you've got this, either way.

Normally, I don't save any sent messages, and instead rely on the nesting feature. This alone can complicate things when someone replies to an earlier message and/or doesn't have quoting turned on, or if you've already deleted previous messages.

Mostly, not saving sent messages hasn't been a problem for me. Other than now, of course. Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing the right thing, or worrying too much about security by not storing copies of messages.
