Minnesota Mushrooms
    #2845304 - 06/30/04 09:29 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Hey. I found two mushrooms in my neighbors compost pile.

- Compost pile, mostly grass mostly decayed. Minnesota.
-the gills are kind of a rose looking color, sort of tan colored. the gills arent attached to the stem
-one cap is about 1 3/4" and another is about 1 1/2"
-the stem is solid, white colored. when it breaks it breaks unevenly.
-the cap is kind of dirty white colored, not too smooth but not bumpy just wavy
-I will take a spore print tonight and post up tomorrow
-the mushrooms smell like dirt. pretty stinky.

I broke the stem and it didn't bruise blue.

I hope this is enough info for some sort of ID, I only found two shrooms.

The shroom on the left is kind of dilapidated.

First guess is Agaricus of some sort.

Nice job on having the rules read on your first post!

Those look like they're from the genus Agaricus. They're difficult to identify to species even with a detailed description, and yours isn't terribly detailed. We need a couple more bits of information to approach an ID.

First, cut one in half vertically, then scrape the inside of one half with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the tissue. After a few minutes (up to an hour), there will probably be color changes where you bruised it. Let us know what color it changes to.

We also need to know about the odor. You said they smell "like dirt. pretty stinky." Try sniffing where the stem joins the cap (stick your nose right in there), and if there isn't an obvious odor other than earth, try the base of the stem (scrape the dirt off first). If there isn't an obvious odor, try crushing the stem base with your fingers and sniffing a bit more.

Several species of Agaricus are edible (like the ones at the store, for example), and several are poisonous. The poisonous ones are common enough that David Arora refers to Agaricus as the "lose your lunch bunch". So don't eat any unless you're certain of edibility (and even then be cautious). On the positive side, the poisoning is relatively mild, mostly consisting of the usual nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, often with intense headaches thrown in for fun.

Happy mushrooming!
