We decided to wage war against the Nazis for two reasons:

1. It would elevate the US to a global power if it swooped in to save France and the UK

2. We didn’t want Stalin to turn Europe red.

Yeah, we should’ve stopped Hitler. We should’ve done it way before we gave him land and power. But the problem with waging wars for moral reasons is the fact that whoever controls your military decides what is and isn’t moral.

Is Cuba less moral than Saudi Arabia? Nobody believes that, and yet we strangle one for 70 years and enrich/defend the other.

Not to mention, defeating Hitler over rational (national) self interest also meant the necessity of the Cold War for the ensuing half century, despite the Soviets not being an immoral threat by any conceivable metric. And we’re gonna put the threat of nuclear war back on the table once more over China.

While I agree, humans on the whole have a pretty solid core moral system when it comes to extreme acts of brutality. I would like to believe as a race we can collectively agree genocide is beyond the pale, as we do child abuse, etc.

And if we ever get to a point where those become acceptable, this conversation doesn't even matter, it's gg

Well we’re already at that point lmao. We started rehabilitating the Nazis immediately after WW2, we put Japanese war criminals to work in Korea. The allies never got held accountable for their genocides (British Raj in India, Native Americans, Congo, Algeria, etc), Turkey gets away with Armenian genocide, we immediately cover for lunatics like Suharto in Indonesia and Pinochet in Chile. We all decided the genocide in Yemen didn’t matter because the Saudis are a strategic partner. Israel is a literal settler-colonial apartheid state and we have the nerve to call them “the only democracy in the Middle East”. List goes on and on. There are no moral certainties, it’s about power, always has been and always will be.

The problem is humans as a whole don’t get to make these decisions, and are sufficiently propagandized to so that they don’t ever have to stop and think what does or doesn’t constitute a genocide. CNN or the State Dept will make up your mind for you.

You know what? You're right. I'm an eternal optimist which has its faults like sometimes assuming humans are capable of more empathy than they are. I think what I was originally referring to was more akin to a "mad max" situation, but you're right, atrocities you've listed have been deemed acceptable by many. :dead:

I started this thread, so you all know how I feel. Yet, I do feel that world war II was something unavoidable for the Americas. Unfortunately, that's what started the military industrial congressional complex.

Did you guys know the head rocket scientist for NASA that helped send a man to the moon... Was a fucking Nazi that the US provided cover for?

We all know that many Nazis were allowed cover to escape to Argentina. Many high profile, serious sadists even.

The US took many top German scientists. Werher Von Braun probably the most famous. He was also imprisoned for being a socialist sympathizer in Nazi Germany.

It's always easy to pearl clutch and Monday morning quarterback *most* choices made in war. Fog of war is real...all the military is, is trying to put sometype of order in chaos.

I think most people believe its like Call of Duty and the choices are so clear when rounds come down range or one seeing massive mechanized movements. It's not.

nothing wrong with being an isolationist. i would tend to agree that wars that are in the other 2/3rds of the world have nothing to do with us and we only do it to practice and oppress.

i will say tho, if we werent so dead set to not be colonizers things would clean up alot better. if we ARE going to have a war machine, then we should absorb the countries we are fighting for so they cany just return to overtly corrupt policies and practices when we are done. also i think it would be cool to be able to travel abroad without a passport.

but i dont understand why we can send billions of dollars to a country smaller than texas. pay for it with taxes and then have people turn around and say we cant house the sick, feed the homeless or cure the starving because it costs too fucking much.

and i get that letting russia have ukraine weakens us as a nation, but if ukraine was the UNITED STATES territory of the ukraine, then russia would be even weaker, so atleast my tax dollars would be being spent on an ACQUISITION. instead of hopes and dreams of cooperation in the future.

and then when we cant afford to not have hungry homeless people dying of leprosy on the street we at least have a shiny new place to vist we can point to as the reason why.

To be fair if we "absorbed" them we would likely still spend billions of dollars and much conflict "cleaning then up" to american standards or whatever. Not to mention every citizen would probably be against the idea of the ol US of A swooping in and taking over their everything. Historically that has lead to some pretty bad results for the colonized.

And let's keep it 100, America has enough money to pay for all of the above, and then some. We just choose not to. Spend some time on this website: https://mkorostoff.github.io/1-pixel-wealth/

And then realize they're talking about 400 individuals, not the richest nation in the history of the world. The US GDP figure in 2022 was $25,462,700 million. MILLION. That number is $25,462,700,000,000 per year. 25 trillion. We have the resources to do literally it all.

Forreal. I can only assume people like Bezos' ego is massive, and seeing that he has enough money to permanently eradicate malaria across the globe why wouldn't he do that? People would build golden statues of him, he'd be remembered as a fucking hero for all time. But nah let's build rockets and make workers piss in bottles to meet quotas
