Cross posting from cult pic of the day.
I tried 1 bag of master's mix with 1qt of oat as spawn. It produced more dense fruit but less overall weight. The rest were just 50/50 master's mix noc'ed up with 20ml liquid culture.

Not my usual but some gourmet mushrooms I been working on. I cloned a lions mane kit my wife bought and made up a few master's mix bags. I got 4lbs 9.9oz of completely clean mushroom. I threw about 2.5lbs of trim that had masters mix mixed in it.

Stumbled on this website with a lot of information. This page here is quite cool since it describes many different shapes and looks of oyster mushrooms and their caps, and the reasons for each thing.

What do you think about this, is this information correct? I'm not sure yet, since the last one (caps with dark lines/spots) is supposed to happen when the RH% fluctuates too much. And I'm having those dark lines in my FC where the RH% is quite constant, and not getting those in my another FC which has way more fluctuation in the RH%. But I'm not sure yet, I need to test stuff out now that I've read this page. How does your experiences relate to this information guys?

How would you fruit a shiitake block without a grow tent / room?

outside temps are too warm and dry here so contemplating just putting the naked block on a rack in a plain clear tub with some water in the bottom… too clunky?

Hello all, i want to grow oysters, lions mane outside but its too dry sometimes. i have a greenhouse (pic is attached). i want to put humidifier with humidity sensor inside and cover the greenhouse with plastic film. my question is how to provide ventilation. if i cut a small window would it be good enough?

Replace some or all of the panels with chicken wire, then add either a sprinkler system, hose, or just keep an eye on it. That open side closest to the camera can be covered with wire.

Outdoor beds are pretty easy to maintain so long as they're not in direct sunlight, and you maintain moisture. If in direct sun, use shade cloth.

Depending on where you are you may want to use insect netting or something as well. Had pleasing fungus beetles go to town on my mushrooms in early spring here in the Deep South. They’re pretty large though so should be easy to keep out with a good setup.

Winecap bed maintenance? [Re: Mycolorado]
    #28413953 - 07/30/23 12:23 PM (5 months, 27 days ago)

Greetings!  I have no idea if this is actually in the correct forum, but I can't seem to find one that fits or has any real results when I search for the above subject.
I built a winecap bed last summer with a 5lb bag of grain spawn.  I used soaked straw and covered it with wood chips.  It fruited this spring/early summer with a yield of maybe 3+ lbs of winecaps.  Since it appears to be done fruiting, I'm thinking I should consolidate the material (it slowly spread out), and layer in compost or dry leaves (from last fall) or both, as well as straw and more wood chips?
I think Winecaps are perennial, assuming they are fed, so I shouldn't need more spawn, should I?
I'm hoping someone has some experience with this so I don't go off in the wrong direction!.  Thanks for your help!
Jennifer in Southern NH

Do I need an SAB to inoculate my sawdust blocks with grains?

I got this idea that seems to be just awful, but I gotta throw it here anyway.

When it's rainy and high RH% outside, my grow building gets quite humid too (65-70RH%) which leads to problems with my microgreens etc. I ordered a dehumidifier (which actually sucks, it's supposed to be ok with 90m2 but I have way less than that and it does just nothing) and haven't got a good place for it for running the collected water.

And I thought, I could put it on top of my FC humidifier water reservoir and run the water hose from dehumidifier into that. That way I'd save water, I'd have to fill the reservoir less frequently and get the dehumidifier to a good place. The dehumidifier has a air intake filter and the water always comes out crystal clear. So maybe it's actually quite clean? The dehumidifier is brand new and if I clean the filter regularly, maybe it's not so bad. But then again, yeah, it does not sound that clean, thinking I'm growing food (commercially). What do you think?

Is the title of the thread meant to change like that?^
Anyhoo, I’ve given lions mane a rest till I can set up a tent and thought I’d try my hand at king oyster, could find pretty much zero info or teks except for a couple of mentions that you can grow them like cubes in a tub with straight coir, tried that and got contam, then tried a couple of grows in ziplock bags at a higher ratio and got pins which then stalled at a couple cm tall, might have something riding my culture but thought it best to check in that I’m on the right track tek wise.
Should I just treat these like other oysters in a bag or bucket with straw or is the tub/coir method a viable course of action?

Subject shouldn’t be changed.

Kings are grown for their stipes as opposed to caps so are given less FAE than regular oysters. I would recommend growing them on wood based sub as opposed to coir.  Look into supplemented hardwood fuel pellets or master mix.

I’ve been growing lions mane on a wood based sub so that’s easy but should I then fruit the bags in tubs to limit fae?

Yeah, cut the tops off the bags after full colonization, case and run in tubs would prolly do.  Others might chime in with some alternative strategies.

What about a master's mix bag grow? Like a bit of sub in the bottom of a bag and then you could choke it out for a while till the stipes got leggy? Never tried it just a thought.

I’ll try that, I just want to get spores and ditch whatever is riding this culture, I suppose I could buy one and clone it:shrug:
