Does the forum software attach IP addresses to posts?

Many forum software packages store posts with the IP address they were made from, usually only visible to administrators. It may also be obfuscated when rendered but stored in its full form in the database. This is different from web server access logs. I am wondering whether Shroomery does this, and if so, whether IP address information is retained permanently.

Yes, we indefinitely retain the IPs that were used to post messages.

Thanks for answering. That seems pretty risky with the nature of the posts made here.

To note, over the course of a quarter century in existence, we have never once been served a court order / subpoena for anyone's IP address. Even in the famed Dread Pirate Roberts / Ross Ulbright / Silk Road case, for which we were subpoena'd, the only ask from the US Dept of Justice was to provide a copy of all posts to the "shroomery.org" discussion forum by the user associated to the username "altoid".

Yeah in 26 years it hasn't ever been a problem. Like I say in my bio:
Quote:
As far as I know, nobody ever got busted due to a post on the Shroomery. We got a subpoena once in a child custody case, but the guy knew about it and expected it. We also got a subpoena for evidence in the Silk Road trial, but it was for a post that was already public, and it wasn't the evidence that led to the bust. Those are the only incidents I'm aware of. Always use caution and common sense on this site, but hopefully that helps put the risks in perspective.
IP information is used to prevent abuse on the board, like puppets and spammers. If we didn't have that tool to rely on, the community would look pretty different. In our privacy policy we advise people to use a proxy, VPN, or Tor if they're concerned about keeping their IP address private, and that's still my advice. Not just because it makes our jobs easier, but because it's a more reliable and generally applicable way to protect your privacy online compared to putting your trust in random website operators.

I believe that the privacy policy should be updated to reflect this, since it currently makes no mention of IP addresses associated with posts.

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess I felt we made it clear that IP privacy is the responsibility of the user, but I edited the privacy policy to specify the circumstances where we permanently log IPs. I also fixed a few other details which were out of date. Thanks for reminding me to keep that information current.
