Martha tent exhaust and home's HVAC fresh air intake
    #28442813 - 08/22/23 12:43 PM (5 months, 4 days ago)

I'm in the process of setting up a martha tent to grow gourmets. The fruiting room is located in a below ground basement with the ability to vent the exhaust into a window well (approximately 5 feet below ground, 4 feet in length and 3 feet deep).

The houses HVAC fresh air intake in located on ground level, 4 feet from the window well.

If I am exhausting into the window well, are there any concerns that any spores travel that distance (5 feet up and 4 feet to the side) and back into the house via our HVAC intake?

If so, any suggestions to mitigate to problem?

Thanks ✌️

I've been doing some googling. I didn't know this was a thing. Apparently some systems have it but it seems extremely inefficient to me. Is it something you can turn off?

My understanding is because I run a high efficiency furnace, a fresh air intake is required to create the combustion, whereas a convection furnace intakes air from around the unit. So turning off the intake is not an option, but I'll do some googling on adding a filter to the end of the intake (there is a hepa filter inside the unit as well).

Thanks for helping out 👊

You definitely wouldn't want it sucking in a bunch of spores. I guess it would depend on which way the wind blows

You can run a longish vent line up outta the window and then around the corner and another 20'. use a larger cfm exhaust fan. How many shrooms are you planning on growing?

Yeah was thinking about venting around the corner as well. The grow tent is 2x2x4 and max I would be growing at any time, which may be pushing size limits, would be 8 blocks of gourmets.

I've also been googling indoor dryer vents, used on dryers where no outdoor venting is possible and acts as a lint catcher. Basically a can at the end of the ducting with water at the base. Also contemplating putting that at end of the ducting inside the window well but will require some maintenance/cleaning.

The HRV/ERV unit should already have a pre-filter. If you kept that changed on a regular basis everything should be fine. I'm not sure all your vents are up to code anyways lol. Most intakes of any kind require about 4' of space per the install manual and I think our codes reflect that here in the PNW. Been a while since I was in HVAC though and things do change.

Thanks for your input everyone.  Once I get things running I'll post a quick update for anyone catching this thread with maybe a similar issue in the future
