Volume is less precise but that is the recipe for low-prep millet. You could measure your millet by volume then weigh it and use that weight to volume ratio from then on.
I don't know much else about your grain sterilization or sterile techniques so it could be more than one issue. If you are unable to make sterile grains, maybe look into PF tek.
Good luck!

Any insights on how to spot bacterial contamination using my picture as a reference? Just asking to try to learn more. : )

Watery grains and not recovering after shake. Plus the myc looks ill, but that's hard to explain, and it's not a cube, so a bit harder to develope a eye-feeling for the myc.
Take a look at "how it should and shouldn't look like" thread. Don't have a link rn.

Yo yo, just wanted to let everybody know I'll have some other occupation I'm diving into for my ADD.. growing cannabis.. never thought I would do that, but apparently it helps a lot with inattentive ADHD. So I won't be participating actively.. but I won't be gone.. got 3 shoeboxes with subtropicalis absolutely beautifully white mycelium ready after 2 weeks of vacation. Just got home and checked out my reishi.. got to share

They were shaken around 2 weeks after inoculating the jar... they're way beyond consolidation at this point

I only got 1 successful Semp grow under my belt but IMO I would send that jar. Worst comes to worst you learned something and lost a bit of coir.
That is my approach though, I have to learn by doing.
I'm afraid this is my kryptonite, i've grown all sorts of species but this one puts me to shame... that said, the battle is far from over

If the orange spots are just grains pressed against the glass jar, I don't see any visible contamination on these photos. The "watery" parts are normal for me with Semp that has colonized grain for a while.
My ready jars look like this (but they are just about 20 days old):

If you don't want to take any risk, just straight case your jars with pasteurized or microwaved cactus soil and fruit them like this (in some kind of JCM chamber). Here is a straight cased jar, the mycelium underneath the casing looks like yours imo:

Yes indeed, they're just grains and this has been colonizing ever since the shake after 2 weeks from inoculation. They did recover about a day later. Fortunately enough, i do have a jcm chamber so might as well go for it. Not sure if I have cactus soil in my shed but there's plenty of peat, verm, aragonite and so on.. Truly appreciate the advice.

Quick question: can subtrop agar handle cold storage? I've got a couple of plates that I want to put on hold — are they ok in the fridge?

LOL, a latin dad joke! I actually studied latin at high school many moons ago but to admit that probably gives my age away.
I am aware of some species that don't handle cold storage so I'm being extra careful.

talking about age, ahh. lets leave it be
i might be wrong as i havent transfered from the semperviva cultures in my fridge. they do look normal. apologies if i unintentionally went out on a limb here..
what are your findings? which species can't stand the cold?
