Agree that slow ones are much stronger than fast one. Tried both ones and decided to take slow one again. It takes time but it makes sense.

I've tried growing these bad boys for ages now, they end up siting on a tray for weeks on end until finally succumbing to mold/trich/etc
This jar's been left untouched since July 18th... at this point i'm debating whether or not i should just dump it into my compost bin

Did your other jars look like that? Cause they are bacterial, you can tell from the moisture between the myc and the glass plus the wet uncolonized grain pressed against the glass. If you try and shake those they are going to be an absolute bitch to break apart.

My clean jars started turning orange after a couple weeks of being colonized too.
These definitely take too long to have questionable spawn, with cubes I’d say go for it but I wouldn’t have much hope for sketchy semp.

This is the correct answer and I wish I had learned it sooner. Cubes can give you a false sense of your skill set. Plates and jars look pretty good? Go for it. Get fruit. Even tamps may let you get away with less than perfect.
But the slow semps and other exotics are not so forgiving. Or that is what I believe that I am learning. I don't think that they are necessarily "harder" to grow but they are less forgiving on sterile technique and selection.
It is not like it is revolutionary to say that clean spawn is the answer to most problems. Just that it seems to be that much more important with exotics versus cubes.

I've got one plate that is either natalensis or subtrop here — I was a bit careless when doing a bunch of transfers and this plate fell between the cracks in my labelling system.
Do you think when it grows out I'll able to tell the difference between them? Maybe if I post a pic here when I get to that point?

I only got 1 successful Semp grow under my belt but IMO I would send that jar. Worst comes to worst you learned something and lost a bit of coir.
That is my approach though, I have to learn by doing.

If the orange spots are just grains pressed against the glass jar, I don't see any visible contamination on these photos. The "watery" parts are normal for me with Semp that has colonized grain for a while.
My ready jars look like this (but they are just about 20 days old):

If you don't want to take any risk, just straight case your jars with pasteurized or microwaved cactus soil and fruit them like this (in some kind of JCM chamber). Here is a straight cased jar, the mycelium underneath the casing looks like yours imo:

Melgo said: Hello Workman,
I am contacting you on the_chosen_one suggestion.
This is regarding: "Psilocybe hoogshagenii var. convexa (P. semperviva)". I've been growing it for close to 2 years now. I love this species, and have opened a journal to detail my growing procedure for it.
There is somewhat of a puzzle now in the Official Ps. Subtropicalis/Semperviva Thread.
We've come to the conclusion that 2 lineages are in circulation: Slow lineage: slow to pin, and crazy potent. Fast lineage: pins within ~14 days from spawn and much less potent.
I have grown the "fast" lineage multiple times. I've been sent prints of the supposedly "slow" lineage, but so far it grows as fast and is as potent as the "fast" lineage for me.
Do you know about those 2 supposedly different lineages? Do they exist for real? Or pinning time and potency of the P. semperviva is only a matter of growing conditions?
If you could give us some light on this matter, that would be great.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my message, and for all your mycology work.
Have a great day Melgo.

Workman said: Hi Melgo.
Say hi to the_chosen_one, we go way back.
I'm going to assume the slow lineage is the original collection by Heim and Cailleux in 1958 and featured in the historically significant Les Champignons Hallucinogenes des Mexique (Heim & Wasson, 1958).
In the early days, there wasn't much available and I was able to acquire the original from a German academic culture bank. This would be the culture that made the rounds for years and is widely distributed by now.
Now that there is more awareness and genetic information, new collections are available.
Here is what I have banked: Psilocybe subtropicalis : 1958 Heim/Cailleux semperviva Psilocybe subtropicalis : Xico Psilocybe subtropicalis : Coyopolan
More details at https://sporeworks.com/Psilocybe-subtropicalis-P.-semperviva-Spore-Print-Microscopy-Kit.html
I haven't grown any of the new ones to compare, but it wouldn't surprise me that there are differences between the collections. But growing conditions are a confounding variable. I guess the short answer is I don't really know. I will eventually grow out the other collections and I will make a point of comparing them at that time.

I’d like to grow both lines out from spore a few times and have the fruits tested, seems like that would be a pretty reliable conclusion. Even those at home potency tests going around now would be interesting.

Guys, what do you think about this jar? Inoculated on 22/07, shook at 20-25%, recovered in 1 or 2 days... then shook it on 07/08, took like 4 or for 5 days to recover, and today it's just at this point. Do you think it has stalled?

It's normal the first recovery was fast and the second one not at all?

Seems overwet and is clearly bacterial. How was it inoculated and how the grains were prepared?

Agar wedges, but I use an european 10 PSI 7 quarts PC (cooked for 3 hours), and also I'm not sure about my sterile technique.
It was a miller no prep using 2:1 (grain:water), measured with the scale.

Millet low-prep is 2:1 grain to water measured by volume not weight.

I’m not sure on the pc times but 3 hours seems low for 10psi. I would hydrate the grain first too since you’re using lower than 15psi you’ll want to make things as simple as possible as far as getting complete sterilization.

I like the take of this dude:
Seems to me that it makes better sense to weight quantities in a scale, and be consistent in that, than using volume which is a little less precise. At least with solids (grains), cause 1 ml = 1 gram of water.
Do you think that my problem have been caused (also) by adding too much water to my grains?
