Opeth sounds like a christian band.  HAHAHAHAHA!! Funniest thing I've read in a long time.  Thanks man.

Checkout:

Ozric Tentacles
Future Sound of London
Shulman
The Mars Volta
Porcupine Tree
Vast
Jerry Cantrell
Gong

I could go on forever, but I won't.

i could list a lot of bands you might like, but it might detract from the one i think you should really check out - Secret Chiefs 3. everything from drum and bass to schreaking death metal, trey spruance is the greatest compose of today IMO.

CHECK EM OUT! Book M is what i recommend you start with, hope you find what you're after!

Your description of songs you like makes me think of Way to Blue by Nick Drake. Just him singing over a very eerie string track. All of his stuff is good though.

Okay, I want the most depressing fucking song there is.. I haven't heard much that I am too impressed with yet but please just the one song that will trigger something in my brain to go to the kitchen, get a knife, and cut off my balls   I want something that feeds on the darkest lowest feelings of dispair.
Thats the kind of music I find empowering.

Anything by Elliott Smith, particularly Miss Misery.  The guy ended his life a few years ago by stabbing himself in the chest.  Doesn't get much more suicidal than that.
