"Opeth! Buy the album 'Damnation'. It is acoustic/clean compared to their usual sound(prog metal, like DH said ). If you dont mind screaming/deep growling vocals, check out their album 'deliverance'(and make sure to listen to it more than once before you criticize, as I felt like not listening to it ever again the first time I played it, and then the second time I heard it, it was AMAZING! "
Agreed!

You're probably familiar with this piece but if not check out:
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings
I simply cannot listen to this without tearing up.

A'neglakya said: I'm not really in tune with the music scene anymore so I dont know whats new and whats any good (god I sound lame dont I). I like dark music with good lyrics and some depth to it. I pay attention to composition and like things tunes that are unusually constructed. I enjoy listening to artists like nine inch nails, dead can dance, tweaker, Gen Dos, KMFDM a few women artists like Rasputina and a little bjork. I love strings especially dark powerfull Minor chord sounding stuff and very much enjoy classical music.
So can someone please help allieviate my depression by suggesting a few artists to check out that might stimulate my psyche? Thank you for your time.
Sounds like you've got pretty similar tastes to me, although I'm also out of touch - can't say I know who Tweaker or Gen Dos are. Also I don't really pay attention to lyrics stuff, the music is more important to me...
Anyway, here's a bunch of stuff some of which you may already have / be aware of. Here's a mish-mash of stuff some orchestral, some industrial, some 'folkish', some electronic-ish etc. Let me know if you find any of it useful...
Lisa Gerrard's solo albums (from Dead Can Dance) Dark Sanctuary Raison d'?tre Diary of Dreams Michael Nyman Portishead BT - Fast and Furious Theme Hybrid - Opening Credits, Dreaming Your Dreams, If I Survive... Beth Orton - She Cries Your Name Lush Curve Scraping Foetus off the Wheel - Pigdom Come tracks, and other Foetus instrumental stuff Gary Numans last couple of albums - Pure and Exile Lamb - Gorecki Love is Colder than Death Love Spirals Downwards Rise And Fall of a Decade Cocteau Twins Snog Stoa
That ought to keep you going for a while...

wow, well i've got a lot to listen to now. A lot of those I've heard but many I haven't.
Boards of canada is pretty good. Modest Mouse has a few songs that really stand out to me. I forget the name but the lyrics are "so long to this cold part of the world" or something along those lines.. really nice and depressing. Something to make me want to kill myself. I love it.
Godspeed You is pretty cool too. I dont like Opeth because its way to metal and when I think of metal I think of the 80's, big hair, and cocaine.
Explosions in the sky aint to bad either. Its the radiohead kind of depressing. Soft happy depression.
The type i'm really trying to isolate is the AIC down in a hole kinda shit. That hopeless , dark power. Pure mental masochism.

Yes I love "Down In A Hole" very powerful song for me. I just can't think of anything else like it. You should really give Opeth's Damnation a chance. It is not at all like their other albums, which I don't care for much, but Im telling you, Damnation is phenomenal. Download "Windowpane" and "Death whispered a lullaby" to see if you like it. If you appreciate good music you will not be disappointed.
Good luck with the quest and keep us updated on what you find because I am always anxious to hear new good music.

Man, i'm sorry but that Opeth stuff sucks. It sounds like christian music. I went to church camp once and they played music that sounds identical to this. I notice a lot of christian music is nothing but a mere copy of the "secular" music world.
There is one "christian" band i like called Klank. The guy's name is Klay scott or somethign like that. It's pretty good for industrial music.
Tweaker is NIN's drummers pet band.
Gen Dos is a band from Russia (or somewhere in that area). They are kinda cool, kinda metelish but I love what the guy can do with his voice.

It sounds like you'd enjoy black metal, a lesser-known sub-genre of metal (and my personal favourite genre of music) motivated mainly by nihilistic ideology. It's a very unique sound, often with classical influence, and it's the darkest music you'll ever find. To get a good idea of the genre, try to download "With Strength I Burn", "In the Worldless Chamber", and "Cosmic Keys to my Creations and Times" by Emperor. If you like what you hear, shoot me a PM and I can recommend some more black metal bands.

Maybe you should check out their other, harder, stuff like "The Drapery Falls" but I must warn you this really takes some time to get used to and it will definatley change our opinion about them being christian music.
Post back your opinion.

You want sad and depressing...
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Sleep
That is the saddest song I have ever heard.

Godspeed You =
Okay, I want the most depressing fucking song there is.. I haven't heard much that I am too impressed with yet but please just the one song that will trigger something in my brain to go to the kitchen, get a knife, and cut off my balls I want something that feeds on the darkest lowest feelings of dispair. Thats the kind of music I find empowering.

The soundtrack you get with the Hey Christian God single by Snog (might be hard to locate now) was very despairing in a post-apocalyptic sort of way. Vaguely reminiscent of Depeche Mode's "To Have And To Hold" but more ambient, with things like kittens despairingly meowing in the background....
Hard to look past earlier Cure stuff as well (Faith / Pornography era)...

For classical, check out a composer named Edgard Varese. He is one of my favorite composers, very very powerful works, very dark and brooding, and he incorporates unusual sounds into his pieces. He composed from the early to middle 20th century.
