Pictures of my Laboratory.
    #2838840 - 06/29/04 06:36 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Lack of sterile working environment gave me the idea of creating a cheap lab to work in. I used 1/2'' PVC Pipe as the frame and stapled a few layers of clear plastic tarp around the side. There is a medium sized clear tupperware container with a HEPA filter to work on. The material to build it cost less than $30.

If you notice there is a small hallway leading into the main room. This hallway is where I store my lab coat, gloves, mask, tools, alcohol lamp, etc. I sterilize myself in this area, then enter into the main lab.

I'm a bit paranoid at times though because I use a lot of lysol and an alcohol lamp. Has anyone ever been trapped in a small lysol filled chamber and blown up from using an alcohol lamp  :mad2: ?

Forgot to mention. The demensions on the main chamber are 4' X 4' X 4' and the hall way is 4' X 3' X 4'

I dont think it will blow up, but hey there is a first time for everything  well, seriously, as long as you dont do both at the same time and show common sense of course,  there shouldnt be a high risk of fire (imo)

 excellent stuff alkaloidaholic.

i could imagine some troubles arising from too much lysol in the air and fire.
-try to just use a water/bleach solution in a squirt-bottle, its cheaper, just as effective, and better on the ozone layer

seems a bit extreme. what do you use, a scalpel or a mobile phone on your belt?

seriously, though, this is a welcome post. i've recently moved house and am exploring possibilities of where to put stuff and how best to use the space. i have a flowhood and will need to provide a fruiting zone, whether by tub or mini greenhouse shelving unit. anyone else got a growspace to show off and explain?

I agree it is a bit extreme;  But cool.

Personally, I do everything in the open.  But that room and the described technique should surely about eliminate any contamination problems.

Here's my outdoor fruting chamber with sprinkler hose humidification and fence post/landscape fabric shade.

I would be more concerned about the health issues with breathing lysol fumes rather than the risk of fire...

isn't that akin to asking if anyone has ever stuck a gun in their mouth and pulled the trigger? :crazy2: .... it's not like they're alive to tell about it.

anyway, I have read several reports of arms, hands, and clothing being set ablaze (however temporarily) while using open flame in the mushroom laboratory.

Well jeez you would think SOMEONE would have heard about it , wouldn't you? Or does the government cover up these incidents so we don't form a violent mob and burn down the Lysol factory?

I think i'll just play it safe with a bleach solution.

bleach will corrode your lungs pretty quickly in an enclosed area. let me tell you, it fucking sucks/hurts. lysol isn't the best shit in the world either from a health standpoint.

FWIW, i use regular ole isopropyl poured into those quart sized garden misters that you pump up the pressure in. I have another same-type bottle for bleach but am very selective about when/where i use that.

Now this is my little secret of the trade. I dont use a spray bottle. I just loosen the cap enough on the alcohol to be able to squeez out some air. Then I just squeez a stream out over the work surface and wipe down. Just saves a step and is less hastle in my opinion.

I dont know, contamination and super clean enviroment are no worrie to me. Proper technique and self control is more so important.
You can get away with two 15 dollar filters from H.D. and have much great success. So dont belive all the Hype books and people talk about. Its a comercial in away. They breed fear of failure so that you spend all sorts of money and take great precautins to seak results when a lot less is truely needed.

We dont pasturise our staw! Only works though with pink oysters we failed horribly when trying Blue/grey oysters.

Raga: I think that might be ostreatus in the picture but I may very well be wrong.

nice little chamber. if you're gonna rebuild it, use 2x3's. much stronger and cheaper than pvc. pvc has its advantages though, like being able to joint using sleeves instead of nails or screws. and no, i doubt you'll blow yourself up using too much lysol.

yeah, i don't use lysol very much anymore just for the reason that it is so unhealthy to be breathing the fumes in.
