Growing from inoculated dowels * 1
    #28374568 - 06/25/23 08:30 PM (6 months, 30 days ago)

Hey guys. I recently came across a place selling colonized dowels. Drill a hole in, log, knock it in, seal with wax and let it go.

1. Are these practical?

2. Can it be done outdoors somewhere that gets well below zero in winter? Specific varieties to avoid or that work better?

3. The page suggests hardwood. I have access to a ton of pine and probably could find some maple. I don't think either of those qualify as hard. Do they just not work at all or is it just less ideal?

4. Is fall the best time for it? I understand this is a long term thing, like the following year is when I'd see any results.

Thanks for your time and any answers you have for me. I appreciate all of you.

I purchased shiitake dowels a good while back, and those did great (sub zero c winter). I also made my own dowels (very easy actually, you can buy them in the hardware store), with good succes. Those were Hericium Corraloides, a clone from one I found in my region.
Just pick a hardy species.

The thing I found most challenging is aquiring good wood. Pine won't work for most species, but for some it might. I've seen chicken of the woods grow on pine per example. So look up a species thats compatible. And make sure the wood is somewhat fresh, so you'll need a tree to down or branch to cut.

I would put in the dowels early spring, after last frost. Use as fresh as possible dowels. Cover them with wax, and keep the logs moist over summer. You might have your first mushrooms in autumn, but it might also take a year more.

Good luck!
