Partially dried, then frozen shrooms. Want to defrost, but smell like feet.

Sorry if I’ve posted in wrong area.
I grew my own about 6 months ago, turned out quite large but I didn’t have a dehydrator at the time. I tried to dry them in the radiators but it was taking forever. So I decided to freeze them. 6 months down the line, I want to defrost and dry properly using a dehydrator. However they have a funky smell, a bit like feet.
Will they be safe to consume? I just don’t want to be puking my guts up whilst tripping balls.

Stinky feet smells usually means bacteria.
How familiar are you with the smell of "regular" dried shrooms? They have a very distinct smell that doesn't smell great to a lot of people.

I’m quite sensitive to smell, but to me it’s quite a strong smell. I’m hoping that dehydrating them will help. A friend of mine is visiting this weekend and he’s not afraid to give them a try either way.
I have done shrooms in the past, lemon tek. They had quite a similar strength in feet smell.. one of my friends threw up but me and my other had a pretty incredible trip.
I’m going to dry and then power them up, as they are mainly going to be used to micro dose. So will find out if they are viable.

If there is still moisture in the mushroom when you freeze them, they auto oxidize when the defrost and smell bad. Depending on how much water they can be totally destroyed by the process and turn black
Never freeze mushrooms unless they are totally dry

Thanks for that clarification and video! I’m gutted to say the least haha. Rookie mistake.
And out of the lot, if some of the smaller ones are dry enough, would they be salvageable or contaminated?
As I believe some were cracker dry, it was more so the larger shrooms that weren’t.
Will double check when I get home later.

Just buy a fan d00d. Put them on a raised something or whatever so you get air flow beneath and around. It's not rocket appliances or anything.

Agreed, a simple fan can do the trick. But a cheapo dehydrator from wally land or the resale store can work. Those are low power heated fans. They do the job quicker than simply cool air, but simple works.

So nasty smelling shrooms is common with poor storage however, some varieties will have a stronger feet smell than others. Penis Envy smell like feet when you are drying them, it's almost overpowering.
Never freeze fresh shrooms, they turn to goo when you thaw them. There have been some studies that also indicate active loss is more pronounced in freezing Temps. Room temp in the dark us the best for storage.

Yeah, I've had some dried, in glass jars with desiccant packets for about 6-8 years that still look as good as new.
I'm sure they've lost a little potency, but nothing significant.

It should be pointed it that the strong smell you get when you defrost fresh frozen psilocybes is not due to them being “rotten” but because the enzymes released when water crystals pierce cells react with other compounds and produce smelly reaction products. My assumption is that smell is oxidized psilocin.

As long as you keep them cracker dry they seem to last forever. I keep mine in a container with a desiccant, it’s not even sealed that well, but the air is so dry the mushrooms stay crisp.
If you don’t use a desiccant, even in sealed glass jars, they get soft. I’m not sure how that is possible, but my best guess is that as the mushrooms age, there are biochemical reactions still occurring and many organic reactions (esp. decomposition) involve the creation of water molecules.

Yeah I have a basic nesco dehydrator that gets them cracker dry, and they go into mason jars... but you're right, desiccant is necessary for long-term storage.

Ive got some that a friend of mine gave me that smell like feet and are kinda soft. I can't find my dehydrator anywhere to try and salvage what I can. They're APE and they look dank. I might make a tincture out of them after I dehydrate them.

Putting em in front of a fan would help a little, but it won't get em to that cracker dry state.
Get some desiccant packets.

I appreciate all the replies.
I now have a dehydrator, so I’m going to thaw them when I get home from work tonight. But I’ve also ordered a new Fresh Mushroom grow kit (Mckenaii). So hopefully in a month or so I will get a few fresh batches and dry them properly, immediately.
Thanks.

Ya man I lay em out in front of a box fan till they seem dry then I'll make a little air tight chamber with some Damprid in it (make sure mushrooms aint touchin damprid) and then throw them in there and in a couple more days theyll be cracker dry

Don’t used grow kits. Get a PC and grow them on your own. You’ll see better results in the long run.

Dehydrate them then eat a couple, if you don't die then I would think they are ok

Grow kits are much quicker and convenient for my lifestyle.
So I thawed the shrooms, they did not change to a black as the video shown above. Colour has remained the same. The smell is still there, but they aren’t as bad as I originally thought.
The much larger ones were still quite soft, so I threw them away. Just to be in the safe side. Here is a photo of the remaining shrooms I had.
They are in the dehydrator now.. which is gonna take 6 hours. But I have a good feeling they’ll be fine by morning and cracker dry.
