Is there any reason to use a vpn if youre already encrypting your dns and using Tor?

It can provide an extra layer of security and privacy for your online activities, but personally I wouldn't rely on tor its slow, but sometimes leaks your IP if you don't configure it properly.
VPS is the way to go, or proxy chains

You can use it to hide the fact that you're using tor. Or any protocol for that matter, it can circumvent ISP throttling. You can use it for location spoofing to access region blocked content. You can use it to avoid snooping when accessing the Internet through untrusted networks. You can use it to safely connect to your home network as a local node from another network. You can use it for a bunch of other stuff too.

But if youre encrypting your DNS your ISP already cant tell youre using Tor at that point
theres also no way to prove what a VPN does with your data no matter what they claim

Using a VPN is the smart move in general these days, times have changed.

I'll keep researching. Surely with enough know how you can be secure without forking over money to a VPN that could be subpoenaed at any moment
After looking into it encrypting dns isnt enough

tor network traffic has a fingerprint. Tunneling through a VPN obfuscates that fingerprint.
But yes you're correct, it's imperative you absolutely trust any VPN you connect through.

A subpoena requires them to turn over any logs they have, but there are no laws requiring logs to be kept. A lot of VPN providers don't keep logs, so if they get a subpoena they reply that they don't have the requested information. Someone would need to record network traffic going into and out of the VPN to figure out the users identity, which is a whole lot more difficult and time intensive than sending a subpoena. The NSA would have this data because they save all packet headers, but law enforcement isn't going to have an easy time getting it from the NSA.

A lot of VPN providers claim that they don't keep logs, but the thought of admining a high volume VPN service without any log retention seems insane to me. Still, logrotate works a lot faster than the rusty old gears of the justice system.
