Took a stroll yesterday in one of my usual spots and found a few of these:

No abundance as of yet, still quite warm weather.
Nice though to welcome back our good ol' friends.

South west, these were found outside of Bergen. Checked the spot ten days ago, there were lots of Protostropharia semiglobata which I took as a sign that things are moving. The whole area is also surrounded by old mossy birch forest that goes crazy with chanterelles and porcini at the peak of the season.

Thanks rR!
Rumours have it they're popping up in Sweden as well. It's not that early compared to the last few seasons I picked some decent hauls already in July.

Outline of this thread: I. Mushroom Hunting & Identification Forum rules ---- a. Common courtesy ---- b. Trusted identifiers II. Accurate mushroom descriptions III. Tips for those new to mushroom hunting IV. Helpful and important links
I. Mushroom Hunting & Identification Forum rules
1. When asking for an id on any mushroom[s], always include the information requested in Section II of this document.
2. Never give an identification if you are not sure, and never suggest that anyone eat an unidentified mushroom. Mushroom Hunting can be a dangerous hobby if you are not informed. If you suspect that what you're about to say could turn out to be wrong, very clearly disclaim it so people know you are just guessing. Never guess that it is an active species unless you are very sure. Incorrect ID's can have negative consequences.
Do not ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or immediate area. That information can be found here: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area See also An overview on how to find Psilocybin Mushrooms.

They are not Psilocybe semilanceata. Appears to be Panaeolus foenisecii.
This thread is primarily for confirmed finds of liberty caps in the Nordic and Baltic counties. For identification requests I recommend you make a separate thread.

Psilocybe semilanceata, although it seems you managed to mangle them a bit.
Too few to do much, I'd dry them and look for more before consuming.

its such a treat every year to get back out there.. went to a somewhat new location around 830m over sea level, some 3 hours drive. Pretty decent haul for a few hours this early.
So i guess im fucked now and cant stop thinking about grass until winter comes. can live with it.

so the show goes on. just had to look on my way home on a location where "everyone" is usually picking. it seems to be everywhere.
they also seem to be very spread out on the fields. a indicator that the mycelia have had a good year and are gonna flush haard as soon as temps drop more. this is so much fun. i truly wish that everyone that wants some day can do this without the fear. but it is also a bit of the charm in this hobby

You're doing well for mid August. I see your area had a few temperature drops. Still warm in my region, but time is yet on our side. Few years back I got flushes like yours already in late July.

That map seems pretty accurate considering the local conditions where I live. Went out a few times recently, found very little but they're out and about. This morning I had a walk at 4-500 meters, not more than a handful altogether, and they were mostly hiding in tall grass. We still have summer temperatures.
En route:

Thanks, yes it is a nice place when the weather was like today. I walked up a steep trail from the foggy valley you can see in the middle of the picture.
But it's actually 500 meters, not feet. So it is actually 1640 feet. The weather up there can be pretty harsh later in the fall and in the winter, and it is often so foggy you can go astray even if you're pretty familiar with the area.
A guy walking his dog actually fell off a cliff there earlier this year, he got badly injured but sadly the dog didn't survive.

Oh right meters! Such a dramatic location be careful up there! Are lands like that typically parks or private land that you just explore on? I’ve heard private land is treated differently in Norway, in the USA private land is off limits with different severity of risks for trespassing depending on where you are.

This is public land, no limits apart from that you're generally not allowed to make bonfires between April and August. In Norway private land might even in some instances be open for the public due to what we call "all man's right". So you're allowed to enter quite a bit of farmland which is nice since that is also good hunting grounds for liberty caps.

Hi all!
Very cool pics everyone!
Not been active for a few years when it comes to actives, but today I noticed a few little ones on my way to the woods collecting edibles. When in woods, I noticed some medullosas as well, no pics of them at this time.

Well back at it this year again. Had a wonderful weekend with alot of success hunting! I manage to find 2 new spots to pick some shrooms at. One of the spots was truly amazing! I've some pics to share with this thread but I'll upload them from my pc later this week. In the meantime.. what do you do with your libs that turn black after drying? Are they still good to make tea from or shall o dispose them?
Awesome pics guys! Keep em comming

I chuck them. Dried and black means rot from bacteria that might give you food poisoning. I usually detect the rotten ones prior to drying though.

Yeah I'll do that. They looked fine when I picked them. Just wet. Anyways food poisoning is not my kind of music so not worth the risk. Thanks for the reply!

Seems like this year is hotter than usual almost everywhere in Europe. Even the UK thread should be going by now, I see the map you posted a link to says conditions are optimal both where I live and in Scotland, but nothing at all is happening below 5-600 meters. A friend of mine did very well at 600+ meters a couple of weeks back.
I took a stroll this morning along a trail passing through some of the best spots, still only lots of Protostropharia adorning the grasslands. Some of them almost fooled me at first glance, and they were unusually long:

And one scrawny liberty cap:

Had a walk at higher elevations this morning, warm weather rising to approx 25 centigrades at midday. Found just a few, but I feel there is a load of eager mycelium hiding just beneath waiting to explode.

Has anyone tried to "sow" semilanceata? 3-4 years ago I did just that, mixing spores in a drinking bottle and squirting where I felt there was a good habitat. This year I've been picking them in one of these spots. It's a small patch of grass in the middle of town. My dog likes to sniff that patch, so I've been visiting weekly for the past 6 years. This is the first time I've spotted semis growing there. Could be coincidence of course.
Unrelated pic from today:

It's a lake or a pond, not snow. Mind you, it has been snowing lately in select regions at elevations above 1000 meters.

They don't immediately look like P. semilanceata to me, but you'll need to take better pictures that show gills and stem.

Estonians prefer to cut off one of their limbs before they share their Chanterelle mushroom spots. You know it very well. Just drive around the countryside, look for similar spots and start scanning areas. Sooner or later you find more in common with this creature, than with other humans, because you wonder at the fields for hours and hours, and every once in a while search for something in the grass.

According to mushroom-map, this area was supposed to yield something. Ofcourse i knew the place before, but still, the weather prediction part seems to be decent. I think it is finally starting to fruit like it is supposed to.

nice to see that its slowly coming along out there, great pics everyone! i/we went out again and went up to a potential valley around 850m, 5 hours drive one way. not really great hunting grounds it showed, but it looked good on the map :P
so at least we got a great hike and found a few. ended up walking 51km in total. need to to some flein yoga now and wait a little bit longer for the weather to turn "crap"

got a hunch and wanted to go out again, so i did. this hobby is addictive. now it looks like its coming along pretty good.
mostly a few here and there spread out in an quite big area that has endelss potential.. must be like 15+ similar places around there, everywhere i stopped i could find them. no real cluster style but pretty abundant.
they are coming in strong now. its on!

2 days ago I went to a spot I got a nice amount last year and there was absolutely nothing yet, not a sign that anything has grown at all... It was late October last time I was there, so I'll have to check the place every once in a while and hope I'll be lucky soon ~
Those are some nice catches I see on the photos, I hope to get something similar soon ~

Got some spare time and couldn't resist one last run. So I went far far to the wet west. There's f-in snow on the mountains now! Cruised over one of the 1200moh + passages litterly alone up there, spectacular!
And since it's pitch black outside, quite early and I wasn't tired due to caffeine overdose while driving I went for a stroll with my headlamp..
Got pretty spooked when several tons of beef I hadn't seen got curious on me. Got a Pretty decent haul. it looks like it should now, finally! Looking forward to the coming week. Picture quality sucks though

That’s encouraging news. Has it been as dry in the North as it has been here in the south? We’ve had 1hr of rain in the last 2 weeks.

September was dry and warm, but it started to rain about a week ago and now it's rainy every single day.

Hey everyone, Just wondering is the season coming to an end since the last few nights were 2 degrees celsius? Yesterday I went out in the evening and managed to only find 50 libs with slightly frosted caps.. Will this kind of weather make them flush or it’s coming to an end? Thanks

Where are you located? They will come untill several nights of frost in a row. The season in northern higher altitude Baltic seem to be closing in to finish, but they are still coming in pretty decently in other areas that is lower in altitude .. if autumn is going, so will libs. I would be hunting until snow hits

In 2016 we had a similar kind of season as this one, and I picked my best hauls in late November after a week of temperatures as low as -8 celsius. It surprised me then how hardy these fuckers can be. I picked my last haul November 29th that year, they were coming up through the thin layer of snow, frozen but maggot-free and strongly bluing.

Let's see how things come on, mushrooms are unpredictable and we really know zilch regarding their optimal requirements.
Some shots from the previous week:

I'm in Bergen so the altitude I normally hunt in varies from 1 to approximately 600 meters above sea level. Most of my best regular spots are at 200-250 meters. There are many areas around that I've not yet been to, even after almost two decades of hunting in this region. But as man is a strongly habitual animal, I tend to revisit the spots that gave good yields in previous years.

I just love the sombrero guys. Very nipply <3 I'm the last two pics they are growing in gravel, almost no soil. But since there is grass ..
It feels like there is a few phenotypes of libs that occurs quite often. Los sombreros, the wizard hat, super flat, mini, monster, albino .. often in the same patches.
What kind of other variations do the rest of you see?

Hey everyone, been obsessed about finding at least one liberty cap this year. Bought shroom map, been checking various maps and gathering everything I can, but without luck yet. Searched some open fields but as experienced edible mushroom picker I can definitely tell not enough humidity in part of Lithuania Im in.
Today I went to woods to check some roads that are under constant shadow from both sides and boy I found alot of mushrooms which raised my morale to keep searching. Im finding lot of stuff especially ink caps and while I was in woods I've seen crazy amounts of amanitas.
Will be going this weekend to different parts because I can see that North Western part of Lithuania had alot of rain. Some of todays finds tho probably not liberty caps so I left them.

Just keep looking.. that grass land looks very nice, what temps you got? I mostly hunt in high altitude, but lituania seems quite flat? Is there some regions famous for sheep around? For some reason it's usually where I find the most active places.
Mostly I try to find really old, un-machined places. But have also had some crazy finds on fields that has been tampered by human activity.
As anglerfish earlier said, we know silch about their preferred fruiting conditions. Maybe it's still early around you or you just need to keep going and they will come.
It's not like I find them everywhere, one needs to search aloot of possible places until luck hits within the local season
As long as you keep your obsession level up, they will eventually show themselves;)

Water temp is around 13-15 degrees so I assume that's day's average. Actually those open fields looked amazing but I found 2 shrooms in about hour and a half. As I mentioned feels way too dry. Most stuff I found was on this road in the forest which has cut grass on both sides and is under constant shadow through day so it keeps moisture in. If at least 1% was psilocybin mushrooms I would be in outer space for next year probably. Next I went back to the city and managed to find crazy amount of some kind of liberty cap lookalikes, they were growing in low spot in an open field with some big oaks around so it's under the shadow most of the time. Lithuania is very flat compared to Scandinavia so I have little to no choice regarding that. Sheep are very scarce here but we kinda have a lot of cows so I tried following them but did not really seen any difference there regarding species. I did not make a lot of photos of my findings but I was wondering - can Psilocybe semilanceata have different characteristics like color, size, shape in different climate zones and parts of the world? Biggest problem right now I'm facing is wanting every "creamy brown" mushroom to be liberty cap and even if it's not "creamy brown" I'm trying convince myself it is haha.

Nah, a lib is a lib.. They have some slight cap variations occasionally but mostly looks like text book. Darker grey/brownish when wet, light pale beige when dry. Look in the other threads on Liberty cap Id
Just keep going out, hopefully your season has barely started. It's alot of work finding good spots, but soo rewarding!
As you say, if its hot, it's not ..the weather should be in wet woolsweater mode.

Has anyone had any luck in Estonia? I spent the whole day searching in the south (Tartu county) with no luck. I found all kinds of Panaeolus species but no semilanceata. The weather seems perfect at this time.
I know there are fields near Tallinn with confirmed locations, but I've heard the police is also actively patrolling the area.

I went back this afternoon, took a few photos and continued my investigation. It’s impressive how they are everywhere! I still can not believe it. Altitude between 1700-2000m Temperature 5-15 degrees

there is need in the community for liberty cap prints if anyone who still got a functioning season is up for it.. i took a few but most of what i found was in a not so fresh state.
this is a good way to do it, but any plastic container will do if its not to big so that they dry out to fast:

and preferably specimens that are ripe, fresh and not to old since picked.
if you get some done you can post in this thread: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27613283/fpart/18/vc/1
i hope it doesnt interfere with the intention of this thread.
happy hunting !

Some documents as well as Soppos's posts helped me a lot to get an idea of the habitat to look for to find Semilanceata.
Last year I spent all autumn finding a suitable place without success. And this year I see them everywhere!
It seems to me that the key to finding them is to look for the right type of grass and then to have the right conditions. I need to find the original documents and publish them here.

yeah, its all about them grass man! im happy my lib spamming has been to use.
i usually criss cross a new field to find one or a few. then set the sight after those specifik variables of grass, moisture and such and then go deeper.. if i dont find any quite fast i change field. personally i rather "waste" a few fields with few, to find one that is flushing properly.
this year was a tricky one though. couldnt find a proper flush anywhere, just occasional patches. but those are saved for coming seasons so i know where to start looking. there is quite alot of data in my liberty cache by now :P
i also made me a google maps i have been using for years..

I have been surprised a lot of times when it comes to habitat. But almost every time I find them, Deschampsia caespitosa is present, as is the starry moss Campylium stellatum. I suspect a relationship with either or both.
Seven or eight years back I remember finding some really tight clusters growing in the middle of a thicket of young birch trees, I had trouble moving in there. But the same tufts of said grass species were present.
I get the feeling that we know very little about their true preferences, and that many of the keys to their existence and proliferation is found under ground and not visible to us at all. Hence the difficulty with indoor cultivation.

I have the same feeling. They're mysterious creatures and do things their own way. Which is exactly what makes the hunt so interesting.

The ones growing in grass tufts like that often have a strong stipe. Well nourished, girthy solid fruits.

Dry them properly, store them in an airtight container together with a desiccant like a silica gel bag. Keep out of direct sunlight, preferably in a closet. Freezing is not really necessary, I've even heard that freezing them affects potency although I can't say for sure.
All I know is that I've tried four or five year old dried mushrooms without noticing any potency loss.

Hi all,
Tried to hunt in cow dung and sheep dung areas, as well as grasslands (don't know whether they were right ones), but could not get any in 4-5 hours. Only found these 2 specimen, apparently not libs. Southeastern Latvia.

I am no way an expert, but these gills and your description of the habitat makes me think these are "Protostropharia semiglobata". If you google this type, you will get more pictures which are really similar.
All in all, I think Baltic season is pretty much over. Too much night frost, more than 1 week in a row.

My first season this year so Im no expert but last week in Lithuania was perfect weather for libs. Around 8-10 degrees day average and alot of rain. Started looking for libs this year and already found amazingly flushing spot with around 200 individual shrooms and that was 11/03. Was looking close to the weather and next week is around 5-7 degrees day average with some rain. So next weekend will be 2 almost perfect weeks for libs and I will go hunting for sure

So in my opinion grass is most important thing but that does not guarantee you will find something. I would advise you to check all the pictures in this thread and do not look at libs but whats around them. Finding them is not an easy task when you are starting, spent around 35h+ around my city without finding single lib but when I went to North Eastern part found them in about 4 hours in 2 different fields so yeah...

I have had no luck for weeks now, not a sign anything has grown at all. Last week snow came down and it finally was cold for a bit, but the ground is absolutely full of water and perhaps the there's some drowning happening in the places that treated me well last year.
Few weeks ago when I looked at the place, I saw someone else snoop around, without any luck either. I said "hi" to them, which I hope didn't spook them too much lol
I will go again tomorrow, since there will be more snow and rain the day after, maaaaybe there will be something finally coming out the ground, it would be a shame to stay empty handed this year...

I had a bad back pain the last months and haven't spent any time hunting. I take short walks close to my home, walking past a soccer field there's a patch of nice thick grass with moss and a month back I though to myself that this would be the only spot I could be able to find any libs this year. And I thought this with great irony since I haven't seen any growing there ever and what are the chances? Close to zero... Well... The mushroom gods seems to have been active.
Today when I walked past this place (on the asphalt in the background) I again remembered that I should let my eyes go over the grass, so I raised my head and two seconds later I spotted a group of mushrooms. And it was a nice family of liberty caps.
I also found 11 more close by.

Found two populations, don't know whether the lighter one is the lib (darker is not, right?) Lighter one:

Darker ones:

Both:

Maybe somebody more experienced can comment on what are the species? Thanks a lot!

None of them are liberty caps, unfortunately.
Looks like possibly Conocybe and Mycena species.

Yes, or how they found me this time. Like precognition or something, the mushrooms call out to us. Here! Look, I'm right here! Look to your left... now!
We had a couple of nights with frost last month also light snow that melted against the grass once, but since then +5-7C and lots of rain, every day in November I would say... Many people on the west coast have reported a good flush this week. It has been pretty bad until now. I can't believe your part of Norway lacks rain. If recall correct it's the most rainy town in Norway or something?
I'm thinking all the ordinary good places could be delivering a lot right now, so if anyone are in the area west Sweden/north Denmark/south Norway, go and have a look again it's not too late!

Hi. I’d say dont loose hope yet. This year lithuania has been very rewarding for me. It does take some exploring and time to find a good field.. took me a while to find a good spot, but once I found one, a few more followed.
The spots I visit are cow pastures with decaying tufts of grass.(some pics from last year).. The weather is still ok around Klaipeda region, im finding decent amounts.. not finding much when the night temperatures drop below zero tho. Keep searching they’re out there.

Lukenzas, amazing results! They for sure are growing, but I find it hard to find these special weeds as in your pictures....That's the main problem. Maybe you have any hints on how to find these grasses?

It's not about weeds. It's about grass and moss. Exactly what Anglerfish wrote earlier in this thread:
Quote:
But almost every time I find them, Deschampsia caespitosa is present, as is the starry moss Campylium stellatum. I suspect a relationship with either or both.
Deschampsia caespitosa is the most often associated grass species, it's my conclusion from 20 years of hunting. Not that all other grass are bad, there are a few more good species. At a certain point you can easily judge from just looking at the grass if a place have potential to be good or not. I look for species of grass and high percentage of moss.
But concerning the moss, I believe it's actually Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus. Apart from it always being present, I have seen the base/mycelium being attached to the moss, and the moss was more yellow/dead at this spot, not green.
