Shiitake fruiting error - help with remediation?
    #28420682 - 08/04/23 03:49 PM (5 months, 22 days ago)

Ok, so I'm a new grower trying my first round of gourmet mushrooms and I've found that I might have made an error in the growing material, so I'm asking specifically if anyone has any advice on saving this batch!

I colonized six BRF substrate jars from Midwest Grow Kits with Shiitake.  I followed the MGK video, waited for full colonization, dunked cakes for 22 hours, rolled in vermiculite and put in a fruiting chamber (94-99% humidity) and room temps around 70.  I did this on 7/30 and have seen no growth (or bacteria growth, fortunately)

I'm reading deeper about sawdust or dowels being potentially required to make these fruit.

Is there any way I can remediate this grow by adding something?  Can I get some bulk grow substrate with sawdust or something else added made up and break up the cakes into it?

I've searched around but can't find any advice on remediation at this stage.  The cakes themselves were beautifully colonized.

Shiitake grow on wood, so having wood or sawdust is usually required. Also they take months to get ready to fruit. You likely won’t be able to keep them hydrated long enough as birthed cakes. Likely need a cold shock before they fruit as well.

I would suggest you research shiitake growing a bit more before trying again. I don’t think you’ll have much luck with your current situation.

Probably the big mistake was birthing them before they browned.

You could pasteurize some sawdust or other woody substrate and use the cakes as inoculum. why not? i dont think they will produce fruits very well if they have not incubated for 6-8 weeks.

you can use brf cakes for shiitake, even straw is an ok substrate. some growers replace the verm with sawdust when doing cakes for woodlovers but for shiitake on such a small scale, i dont think it will matter too much.

check out the brf tek part 4 video for examples of shii growing on pf tek

Thanks to all who replied!  I'm definitely learning.  The fact that I got good colonization on the cakes is a win for me as this was the test run before growing the varieties that I really want.

Oddly enough, I had two maple stumps ground out last fall and the chips/mulch/sawdust is still there.  I am probably going to pasteurize some of that and see what kind of experiments I can get up to with it.

Ok, so here's the funny thing.  When I inoculated my jars I had about 3ccs left.  They sat in my refrigerator for a month or so, then I went and inoculated a couple of spots in the bed of a stump I had ground out last fall.

These are springing up and only on that side of the bed.

Interesting!  Do you think what I did encouraged them somehow?  I've never seen them in there before and they seem to be centered on the area where I put the spore solution.

Great job! Getting hungry now. And these are better than oysters by far.

Thanks!

This was my confidence-booster first grow and taught me a lot. We'll see where these cakes go as I start putting together stuff to do a bulk grow.

Absolutely! Once you get that first rush of success every time gets easier. I will never grow oysters on a large scale because of the massive spore load, and the danger to my lungs. But Shiitakes are not too bad!

Thanks for the comments.  Attaching an updated pic.  I'm researching when to harvest now.
