New Yorkers consume the most cannabis in the world August 3, 2023 - TimeOut
It's no surprise that cannabis in NYC has been steadily on the rise following 2021's marijuana legalization in the state, which allows New Yorkers 21 years and older to possess, consume, buy and transport up to three ounces of marijuana and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis (the stuff used in tinctures, oils and the like). We now have recreational cannabis dispensaries throughout the city, including NYC's first luxury cannabis and cultural store, Gotham, with plenty more on the way. (The state approved 53 more recreational cannabis shop applications in NYC this past spring.)
And according to a recent study by the 2023 Cannabis Global Price Index, cannabis culture has become so entrenched in city life that NYC ranks as the top city in the world when it comes to marijuana consumption, including but not limited to smoking, vaporizing and edibles.
After examining "the top and bottom cannabis-consuming nations to choose the study cities," the study found that New Yorkers consume an average of 62.3 metric tons of weed every year, beating out fellow dope-loving domestic destinations like Los Angeles (which comes in at 35 metric tons), Chicago (24.9) and Houston (18.5), as well as international cities including Sydney (45.8 metric tons), Rome (21.9) and Tokyo (16.7), all of which cracked the top 10 in terms of total global consumption despite marijuana being illegal there.
The data also revealed which cities had the most and least expensive marijuana. Ranked against its American brethren, New York City came in fourth for the most expensive at $12.5 per gram, with Washington, D.C, Seattle and Killdeer, North Dakota besting it. As for the least expensive, Portland, Oregon, where you can get a gram for seven bucks, is the cheapest in the U.S. Overall, the most expensive city to toque up in the world is Tokyo, set at $33.80 per gram, while Montreal is the least expensive, with a gram set at the bargain price of $5.90.
Good news for cannabis users stateside: the study also revealed that the price of marijuana per gram in the United States might fall to $5.61 in 2030.

Isn't it illegal there? By the state? Amazing that they do anyway. More power to them. The citizens and not the corrupt as shit law makers.
New York, where is batman for the things that really matter in life?

Cannabis has been legal here since 2021, but we still only have 21 dispensaries in the entire state, and home cultivation won't be legal until next summer. I wonder what consumption will look like in another couple years!

Personally I live about three hours away from NYC, but people do manage to make it work. There are lots of illegal dispensaries in NYC with bargain prices, so I think if you can afford rent, then weed isn't going to be that big of an extra burden.

Yeah, you spend a lot on rent but basically whatever you feel like on weed. It ain't hard to pull <$200 ounces of top-shelf if you're interested and even halfway plugged-in. $30 8ths are basically available wherever, whenever. Like buying a hot dog. But some people are loaded, too, and want to splash out on shit like that. Have it hand-delivered, with the options laid out in a fancy otterbox. It all depends.
In general, though, the average not-rich New Yorker spends a much higher proportion of their income on rent. Then recoups some of that by knowing how to do other things cheaply. Economies of scale can do some pretty wacky things to prices there. And don't forget things like not needing to own a car. Shit, some people never even need to leave their neighborhoods. Probably too stoned to, anyway.

https://shop.cannabission.ca/stores/cannabission-kelowna/products/flower?weight=28g An ounce of cannabis in Kelowna Canada will run you $70.00 at the low end and $170.00 top end. Yes that is $2.50 per gram for the cheap stuff $3.60 for quality bud and $6.07 for the best just take a look at the online pricing.
Its five bucks to have it delivered.
If your wondering why cannabis is so cheap in Canada Mark Twain knew the answer to that over a hundred years ago.

It's about the same in the US now, for most people who know somebody. And/or those who shop the clearance section of their local dispensaries (they like to keep the selection rotating, and liquidate old-ish stock). Kind of a 2-3 tier pricing system.
I don't like the super low weed pricing myself. Someone's gotta be getting screwed out of a paycheck at those prices.

Nope pure sun farms turns a very nice profit as do most of the growers. They grew tomatoes before cannabis was legalized. The growers loosing money are the ones who thought cannabis would remain as profitable as it was when it was illegal and overspent on everything.
A new report says cannabis has contributed $43.5 billion to Canada's gross domestic product and $13.3 billion to Ontario's since legalization.
As for the dispensaries.
With a bit of online digging, you may see several prominent sources reporting dispensary owners make between $250,000 to $500,000 annually. These are uncited but likely realistic. That's because, if your business is one of the profitable ones, you are likely making over a million dollars a year in gross revenue.

Again, someone is getting screwed out of a PAYCHECK. I doubt that tending tomoatoes for that company was very lucrative, of course they can turn a profit on cannabis. One of the things I liked about underground cannabis was that the little guy or gal could still make a decent living.

My bad. Put that guy on ignore. I think he just got lost on the way to OTD.
To be clear, I think the places where most people live are shitholes to one degree or another. I'm just not a fan of the automatic let's-bash-on-NYC thing.

According to the numbers quoted ny consumes less than the other cities per-capita.
NY- 8.4 million people, 62 tons of pot LA- 3.8 million people, 35 tons Chicago- 2.6 million, 24 tons
NY needs to smoke about 20 more tons of herb to even compete.
On prices: I went to a gray-market dispensary/bodega in NYC last week and bought 3 eights for $40. $3.80/g (Everything they had was packaged and labeled for sale in CA.)

Would anyone really care if NYC was nuked by Russia? Would anyone miss it and the people there. Been there and it really sucks.
But even if it was. The real worry is still could I get marijuana 3.275 there or not. Fuck it. Going to Seattle.
Veggie knows what is important in life. And Asante, the most wise man on the shroomery. Lol. Glad they get paid.
