So somehow Google hates me and won't give me a straight answer on this one.
My friend is brewing apple cider, each 2 seconds one millilitre of carbon dioxide is being produced. How much ethanol is being produced?
Thanks in advance for your geniousness.

Sorry man I fucked up the question, put carbon dioxide in there now as the constant.
You were completely right tho as the question was.

Nah, just want to know how much alcohol is being produced, knowing that the amount of CO2 being produced.
Yeast eats sugar, creates ethanol and CO2... what's the ratio of ethanol to CO2?

According to this article in Wikipedia the molar ratio of ethanol to CO2 would be one.
Using ideal gas law, PV = nRT, and assuming a temperature of 20 Celsius and 1 atmosphere of pressure, 0.5 ml of CO2 would be equivalent to 2.1E-05 moles ethanol or 0.96 mg/s (using 46 g/mol as molecular mass of ethanol) .
I hope I did the calculations correctly. I'm just typing numbers in my calculator without looking carefully at the consistency of units but the procedure should be correct.

I initially worked it out for 1 mL of CO2 per second, re-edited it for 0.5 mL per second.
[pV]/[RT] = n
p = pressure, using 1 atm as an average = 1.01325 bar V = volume, you said 1 mL per 2 seconds = 0.0005 L per second R = molar gas constant T = temperature, using 25C as an average = 298.15 K n = moles of CO2 being produced, we have to solve for n
[p(1.01325 bar)*V(0.0005 L)] / [R(0.0831446261815324 L bar K^-1 mol^-1)*T(298.15 K)] = 0.000020437 moles of CO2 being produced.
1 mole of glucose produces 2 moles of ethanol and and 2 moles of CO2, therefore 0.000020437 moles of ethanol are also being produced every second. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_fermentation
Ethanol's molar mass is 46.069 g/mol. 0.000020437 mol * 46.069 g/mol = 0.000941513 g
So 0.000941513 grams of ethanol are being produced every second.
Ethanol's density is 0.7849 g/mL at 25°C. 0.000941513 g / 0.7849 g/mL = 0.001199532 mL
So 0.001199532 milliLitres of ethanol are being produced every second.

Gene beat me to it. I was definitely about to type this out because i too am smart but I don't have to now that Gene has. Thanks man
