Couple of Lion’s Mane questions.
    #28411926 - 07/28/23 06:44 PM (5 months, 28 days ago)

1. What’s the secret to harvesting lion’s mane mushrooms so they’re aren’t bruised the next morning? Y’all wearing fuckin’ mittens? Been as careful as my clumsy ass can be and there’s usually still a couple greenish? looking spots where I was holding them. Not as presentable this way.

2. A couple of my bags will occasionally kind of fill up with water where the substrate gets soggy and will even sometimes make it up to the fruit itself. I’m assuming it’s bacteria but it only happens to one or two bags with most of them perfect and one bad that usually gets tossed with maybe one or two with light sogginess in different areas. Tried moving bags around for airflow and still seems to happen. Could use some experienced input on this one.

Almost certainly isn’t water from the fogger as it’s pretty dialed in and everything is damn near on the drier side in there. Seen a couple of gnats that maybe could deposit something? Very few I’ve ever seen in there though. Haven’t been able to figure this one out.

1.
The only thing I've figured out with this is that some strains do it way worse than others. I used to run a lot of mycelia 9514 and I absolutely loved that strain but it bruised really bad. It really bad turned a blue/green color when roasted which kind of freaked out some of my chefs

2.
Try letting them colonize an extra day or two. One of the big YouTube mushroom cultivation teachers of recent has said letting the bags over-colonize before putting into fruiting causes the metabolite formation but I've found the opposite to be true. At one point I kept putting them in earlier and earlier trying to solve this per his advice and it got worse so I went the other way and it got way better. I let them develop thick mycelium / fruiting bodies on top before I put them in now and rarely see this

Also very important to keep a clean growroom and humidifier

Another thing I've noticed, picking them when the teeth are longer gives you a mushroom which is much more resistant to bruising. Only problem is we all want to harvest early to have the best flavor and avoid spore production. But if you harvest when the teeth are about 1/4" the bruising is minimal and flavor is still good.

To me it seems spores are just beginning to drop when the teeth reach this length.

Y’all are awesome, thank you for the tips! The water in the bags has been driving me nuts  This is probably going to mess with my timings a bit but I’ll try to tinker to where they’re a bit more mature when it’s time to pick.

I’m running two until I figure out which one I prefer. One is field and forest which I just restarted so I’ll see how they do with the bruising and water and the other is one I got from a Myers LC which they said was from Mushroom Maggie’s. The MM grows absolutely beautifully for me but going to rerun the FF now that my setup is much better.

I am running Lion's Pride from Mossy Creek and love it.. No bruising.. large flushes. easy to harvest. Grows teeth no problem.

But you may have to clean the culture when you first get it. Other than that though its awesome. The Taste is wicked awesome and well worth the cleanup wait.

Damn, thought MC being a bigger operation would be on top of it. You ever get the soggy sub with that culture? Is that what you have as your photo? Too damn hot to get anything currently but will probably pick up a few new cultures this fall/winter to mess around with.

My Avatar pic is from years back when I was running a LM from Sporeworks that I lost because of mislabeling. DOH!

I got the LC from MC about 1.5-2 years ago. And I never told him I needed to clean it up. I just had to run a few plates and did a clone of some fruit. Once I got the fruit and cloned it though it runs like a champ. The soggy sub from this culture I only saw when I was cleaning it up and had contamination in the sub, before I grabbed the clone of the fruit. Some of that was needing to PC my grains for 4 hours instead of less. And one time when I over misted it for a week and the fruit grew up like a balloon soaking up all the water... New super soaker I bought.. I mean super fogger.. I mean...  https://www.amazon.com/Mxmoonant-Ultrasonic-Humidifier-Horticulture-Preservation/dp/B08B7RC11X/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=fogger+mister&sr=8-15&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0

But once I had the clean sample from the fruit it runs like a champ consistently.. And everyone I sell it to loves the taste.

Both suggestions of letting them incubate longer for metabolites and letting them mature more before picking for bruising worked perfectly!

Increased incubation from 10 to 14 days and haven’t had any metabolites since. Tried 12 first but 14 was perfection for me.

Letting the spines grow out a bit more reduced the bruising a ton. There is still the occasional spot but it’s a light yellow as opposed to the green. Hardly even noticeable.

Just wanted to update with the results and say thank you again! I :mushroom2: y’all!
