Question. Need Quick Answer (Straw + water ratio)
    #2840640 - 06/29/04 04:35 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I feel like a major post whore here so if you want to delete this thread please do so. I can't seem to find the info in my books or online so I am asking here before I begin to PC my straw I need to know the water ratio to add. I am using pint jars and mycobags. How much straw / water do I use? Thank you for putting up with my newBness.

hrmm, I'm confused as to why you're using straw that way in the first place?

generally straw is pasteurized in a boiling water bath, not sterilized. it is useful as a bulk substrate, a jar or mycobag of straw seems like a waste of effort to me. it would make much more sense to inoculate jars or bags of grain with agar wedges, then once colonized, add the grain to bulk pasteurized straw. little batches of straw are not the way to go, for fruiting or expanding your culture.

Well I am doing it this way because I dont think I have the capability or facilities to pasturize straw. The only fruiting containers I have are jars and myc bags. I was just reading that I can fruit from jars and that mycbags of straw work well too.

I dont have a propane heater or anything to pasturize straw, nor do I have those large column bags. How should I do this?

a decent sized pressure cooker (or any large pot) on the stove top works fine for pasteurizing smaller amounts of straw. Pint jars work great for grain spawn generation, and decent sized mycobags should be fine for fruiting. You aren't going to get much fruiting from jars.

okay. Thanks for letting me know. I decided to just use grain in all my jars and bag and will make more spawn for now.

Thanks DH. Surely saved me some mistakes. I'll study your post.

Here is one more quick question. I have some King Oyster cultures started but I read they do not fruit well on straight straw and that I should supplement. What is the best way to do this? Add saw dust?

From GG&MM:

"If cultivating [P. eryngii] on wheat straw, the addition of 5-10% cottonseed meal reportedly has the greatest effect in enhancing yield. (Upadhyay & Vijay, 1991)"

Says yields are better on enriched sawdust though.
