    #2840689 - 06/29/04 06:48 PM (13 years, 1 day ago)

hey all,
this is my first time with grains. i'm using pint jars and it has been 2-3 weeks and they look colonized. i opened one of the jars to do a g2g transfer and the inside looked colonized but i could still see the grains. its hard to explain. i just want to know what it should look like. thank you. LxA

There are many species of mushroom that will colonize grain kernals without turning them white or covering them completely with white mycelium. Usually the outer areas (those near the outside of a jar or bag) are where you get the most notable visual clue of mycelial growth. Dig into the interior of the grain mass and you'll usually find that you can "see" the grain, but at the same time you will probably notice small white strands penetrating it or running through it.

If it was completely colonized by appearance on the exterior, chances are high that it was completely colonized in the interior. However most people will recommend that you wait a day or two after apparent full colonization on the outside just to ensure that the interior is colonized as well.

I'm sure you're doing fine, pint jars usually colonize well in 2-3 weeks if properly incubated (usually even faster than this).
