Calcium Carbonate... pasteurizing straw
    #28402578 - 07/21/23 07:08 AM (6 months, 5 days ago)

Hey hey

I've been on a search for hydrated lime in my area.  My partner picked me up the only option I could find (without ordering online)... The intention is to use it to pasteurize straw for oysters outdoors.  I've attached a pic.  The ingredients do not have Ca hydroxide, but there's no Mg in it, so I wonder if it will work.

From the numbers in the label, that bag appears to contain CaOH. 131% is not possible but it is labeled as CaCO3 equivalent. Based on molecular weights 74% CaO would be equivalent to 132% CaCO3.

Yeah i don't know what's up with those numbers.  I did try calling/email the producer but to no avail.. i wanted to clarify the math with them.
On the bag, it says it has CaO, not CaOH, but from what I've read, calcium oxide still works.  So this lime gets a pass??

If you captured just a bit more of the bag, right above the ingredients it clearly says calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime).

I’m pretty sure that’s the right stuff.

Not sure if it’s a large enough size bag for your needs but I bought a 1lb bag of mrs wages pickling lime to dose in my reef tank as a cheaper source of clean kalkwasser. It’s calcium hydroxide. I got mine off amazon but I think it’s usually sold in stores in the canning/jar sections.

Just letting you know in case the bag you have doesn’t work out.

Edit: sorry I guess most people probably use the bulk hardware store bags though for this type of thing. It’s definitely cheaper than the food grade options. I needed mine to be clean of metals since it can be toxic in the tank.

CaO reacts readily with water to form Ca(OH)2. Even air moisture will react with CaO to form calcium hydroxide.

thanks for your input
so what are the reasons, in more detail, that you are going food grade?  and by "food grade", that must mean give to plants, then eat plants...

The food grade (or higher quality) was specifically for my saltwater fish tank. It just means it’s safe to use with food and is of better purity compared to non food grade (lab grades are even better). If I’m remembering right, the reason I needed food grade or higher is because of the aluminum and silica impurities in it. The aluminum builds up and can cause toxicity issues with the fish and corals if not corrected and the silica causes diatom blooms.

I’m not exactly sure what is used in mushroom cultivation but I’m guessing many probably use hardware store/gardening hydrated lime. I’ve just been using the pickling lime with my casing layers since I have it on hand and I usually use it in small amounts.

FYI also the ph of calcium hydroxide degrades when exposed to air. So if you buy a big bag of it and only use a little bit, the older your bag gets the more it turns into calcium carbonate and becomes less effective.

I’ve never used it when pickling myself but I think it has the same purpose as pickle crisp (calcium chloride) which adds  that crisp/crunch to your pickles. I could be wrong on that though lol. There are other ways to pickle without vinegar though. Salt brine works too.
