A friend purchased a cacti from a local "store",on the pot was the name peruvianus,looks just like the entheo kind.The only difference is that the center of the plant is only an inch or so in diam.could it be a n undernourished plant?The ridges are thin and long,but bluish in color.could a store in the "mart"names have one of these active plants? :rolleyes:

i have found T. peruvianus at those department stores. if it is thin, it may simply not be very old/mature. they tend to grow skinnier in difused/ambient sunlight aswell. it could be a lot of things, but it is possible that it is a torch.

if you can get pictures someone would be able to give you a specific answer regarding your friend's plant.

as a note, there are other genera posessing species by the name peruvianus [as peruvianus means simply discovered or described from peru], ie. Cereus peruvianus. many cacti are toxic and can cause prolonged nasty bathroom experiences or worse, so be sure your friend is confident his cactus is a Trichocereus before he considers using the plant in any manner not indicated by the little plastic plant care tag in the soil :smile:.

people mislabel cacti all the time. it could very well be a trichocereus but it may not not be. your friend should do some research as to what a trichocereus looks like by distinguishable features and what some of the look-a-likes are. you don't want to get sick on the wrong cacti.

all the characteristics match except for the small diam. of the center of the cacti.I was wondering if it could be undernourished?

It could be *malnourished or perhaps just young.

Correct; Cereus peruvianus is different from Trichocereus peruvianus and is not ok to eat. if the pot was only labled peruvianus it could be some species other than T. peruvianus. i would have to be looking at it to tell you whether it is. try looking up pictures of both above mentioned species and comparing.

It contains no mescaline, and it might contain poisons. You need TRICHOcereus.

you can eat your cereus, if you want to. might not be that bad in a salad. just put lots of vineagar and salt... :wink:

i love to wonder how many cereus or myrtillocactus get eaten by lame people... =D

anyways, the cactus might be mislabelled, a picture would certainly let you know what you've got...
