Those are the ones where I toasted my pc at about the 80 minute mark. It probably sucked a lot of the moisture out of the wbs. But I'm just keeping them around to learn from them.

I'm not sure what the questions is but 90 mins is not sufficient imo, it should be considered the minimum threshold and not the standard.

2-2.5 hours should be the norm and is what I and others recommend for 1qt/1L grain jars. I haven't read foomans tek in quite a while but I'm sure that his method works just fine.

My recommendation would be to increase the amount of time that you vent your pc from the minimum 10 to more lile 15-20 mins as well as increasing your cycle from 90 mins to 2-2.5 hours.

I second this. I was running into bacterial issues with the bare minimum 10 minute vent and 90 minute cycle. And I use the reverse Foo man prep. IME 90 minutes isnt enough for teks that dont simmer. I do MINIMUM 2 hours now, and a 15 minute vent. Havent run into bacterial unless i know my sterile SAB technique went south

Hmm, I have a bunch of jars that stalled, most likely due to dehydrated grain. But mine never recovered from the first shake, I guess they were even dryer than yours. The agar wedges were already all shriveled up by that point, around 5-7days. I injected 10cc water in them and they instantly picked up a bit, but then I neglected them and they stalled again. Probably needed some more water injections. I think they are dead by now.

You could just give them 10-20cc of water and see what happens.

I'm gonna let it ride. It's still not stalled. It's been growing slow the entire time since the beginning. Fiddle_head had jars that took 66-83 days to colonize and they grew nice fruits. Granted, his agar was probably much cleaner than mine. Either way, I have T2 jars (probably mold), T3, T4, and soon to be T5 plates (likely all mold lol) waiting in the wings. Eventually a fruit will rise from the ashes.

I'll contribute some more pics, this time specifically of deathstars in case someone has not encountered them before and is curious what they look like. By deathstars I mean clumps of grains that refuse to break up despite them being violently bounced around in the jar.

These jars had some condensation/wet grains stuck on the glass:

These jars did not have any wetness/stuck grains at all:

Granted the above were consolidated well past 100% for a few days, so that is also a contributing factor to clumping, but in general that's a sign of something being potentially off.

For experienced members to comment on, and add more examples and data for the more clean spawn challenged among us...

From T1, lost pressure/h2o during PC Cycle at 80 m8nutes, day 26, 9 days after 2nd shake (had deathstar clumps):

Different batch, 2 hours at 17psi, T2, day 19, 2 days after 2nd shake:

Shout out to Stipe-and-cap for this thread and all the information I absorbed through his posts and videos, I've really improved over the last few months in large part due to them.

I have two jars of PE that have been going off a super fast culture, so fast in fact that they're sketching me out a bit.

06/12 - A2G
06/15 - Shake

WBS. What do you guys think? Not sure about the denser parts (2nd pic) and whether it's pure myc or myc riding along with really fast bacteria. Also grain was prepped on the wetter side, might that account for some of the uneven growth spots?

Why are you inoculating with cultures 1 transfer from germ? If you're having issues with spawn, I'd start there, so long as vent and cycle times are sufficient.

@eugine: if you have that much whispy growth in 3 days from agar, my bets on mold. Looks moldy, also, remove the foil caps post inoculation.

There is a granular texture to the growth that is off putting. I had hopes that I came across a miraculously fast culture, but it was just too good to be true

I use metal lids flipped upside down for GE - Considering upgrading my lid setup to something more legit but preferably unmodified (or requiring minimal modification). Any suggestions?

Plastic lids can be run unmodified. They're pretty easy to find.

I just did the T1s for practice while waiting for others to grow out. What do you think of the T2? I currently have T3, T4, and T5 plates from MSS that haven't gone to grain yet as well as some T2s from clones. This is all one big experiment with different stages for my first bulk attempts. Sorry if it was a waste of time but I like to learn the hard way, I guess.

Don't apologize to me, bruv. Do what you have to do. Germ plates can harbor sneaky contamination so it's best to make a few transfers away from the germ plate to ensure clean symmetrical growth, especially if you're experiencing problems.

Been working on my technique and spawn is coming out better than before (for the most part) - uniform growth, normal recovery after 1-2 shakes, no excess moisture or wet spots. However at 100% I'm finding my jars still somewhat hard to shake up, does this necessarily indicate contam or could it just be from consolidating for too long? Example of a jar in question:

Still looks slightly bacterial to me, WBS with cracked corn also tends to be hard to shake due to clumping (if yours as cracked corn)

:whathesaid:

If you have too many burst grains or things like cracked corn, they both produce excess starch which is very sticky, starch will cause clumping and make spawn difficult to shake.

Yes I use Penningtons and this batch has more cracked corn than the last, thats very insightful thank you.

Grains are rinsed with hot water and a little dish soap till water runs clear.
Simmered for 20-25 mins
Steam dried for an hour
Packed and pc’ed 15mins vent 2hrs @ 17psi

& yes they do look slightly bac to me too, will s2b shoebox. Will try out millet after this bag of wbs.
