My first success with semps! I tried for over a year with a vendor syringe I could not clean up but received a print from a kind member here and very excited to see a flush.

Ive enjoyed seeing the timelines folks are providing so here are mine:

day 0: 1qt spawn to CV (bucket prep, slightly below FC) 1:2, placed in water tub
day 7: cased with pasteurized cactus soil, just enough to cover surface
day 15: pins present
day 21: moved from water tub, dub-tubbed and placed on shelf - misted occasionally because I 2nd guessed myself moving them out of the water tub but space was getting tight there
day 29 (today): spores present on earliest to pin - expect the other half to show spores in the next day or so

Thank you 0t0l for the spores and to everyone for the valuable info provided on this forum, special callout to Melgo and Moopers for their guides which helped this noob tremendously.

:fuckinawesome:

14 days from pins to spores! That's fast!!!

Last night, I was thinking about one "quick" experiment, that we could pretty much all do:

  • inoculate a jar of your grain of your choice with Semp mycelium (grain only, no straw, no coir, nothing but grain).
  • Wait for it to fully colonize.
  • Case it with pasteurized cactus soil or something close to it.
  • Place in: Martha, JCM chamber, water tub, maybe SirPsycho domes, etc.
  • Wait for pins to appear, write down how long it takes.

I have a bastard version of a JCM chamber atm. I'm trying to dial it in, so far not great because fruits aren't developing very well. But pinning is constant. And with Semp: again 9 days after casing I get pins. Doesn't matter the print so far.

Doing so, we get down to the "minimum" - I think.

In my old automated FC, I got amazing results such as this (old photos - wheat cased with pasteurized cactus soil):

It's fairly quick because your jar will be colonized in 20 days, cased and maybe 9 days later: pins - who knows?

Is this to minimize as many variables as possible and see if fruiting times have anything to do with conditions?

Yes indeed. Conditions and supposed (fast? slow?) lineage.

Interesting proposal, although I seriously doubt it'll have any effect on the truly slow variety (Ambrose and similar) that take 4 months to just pin. I gave both pretty much the same conditions.

Well I’m already playing around, and have some grain jars at the ready, and some semperviva LC. You talked me into it. I’ll do two, one in my JCM set up for pans, and one in with the bags in my tent for gourmets.

A man.. I lost the 120l tote to trichoderma... :mad2: I don't understand.. 12 jars of really clean spawn (6 quart - 2 bricks coir).. everything was pasteurized properly with probes.. I've been really anal about keeping things clean.. clean the container.. lid.. heck even the liner cleaned with isopropyl alcohol  why does it contaminate..really really frustrating..:fffuck:

That was an oversized bet, sorry it went that way.

lol I wish I'd seen trich by now in my buckets, so I could dump them with clear conscience. But now I just have to wait and feel less hope each week.
It's been 75 days since spawned to bulk.

Well, I have 7 jars left.. which consolidated for quite some time.. so I'll give it 1 more try spawn that to 1 brick... but this time I will not add such a thick top layer.. (p7 tek) and go Melgo's route..

I'll go for a bucket tek instead of pasteurization in the presto.. maybe the outer layer of the coir got too hot and didn't got recolonized by bacteria.. as I didn't gave it a few days to ripen post pasteurization.

OR

The grain was contaminated.. but didn't show in the jar.. I have it 1 week to consolidate, maybe it did harbor something.. but I highly doubt it.. all 20 jars ended up clean.

But yeah, feel you there 75 days is a long time.. how about scraping the casing, dunk 4h and recase? I recall that used to be something advised in the exotics thread a year back or so.

Well، I tried a few tricks, shaked a few buckets and without breaking the sub apart or make it crack, slammed a few on ground.
Also, as someone suggested to someone else here, I let the surface of a few buckets to dry up a little, and made them extra wet, (1 or 2 millimeters of standing water). The water got absorbed in a day or two.
These were done around 10 days ago, still no pin.

I just might, mix all the buckets together and lay them in a big garden pot, hoping for some miracle by nature conditions, but it's too hot and dry now, and if no pin appears by autumn, will carry them there.

edit:
Forgot to mention, also as a desperate try and to experiment with pH shocks, to see if that could trigger pinning, I sparkled some diatomaceous earth on 3 trays (which were colonized and cased earlier, and casing was fully colonized as well, and showed no pins in months). The powder covered all the surface. Then I sprayed water on it.
These trays also haven't pinned so far.

Well that sucks.

I really like running a bunch of smaller tubs because you can isolate and test more variables without the commitment of a single large tub. I have still had to toss all 6 tubs on a different failed project, which sucks. But at least, I know 6 things that didn't work instead of just one.

Sorry for you loss, but you will get it. It took me 9 tries and and over a year to get these buggers to grow. But now I have a nice reliable culture and process for these and am starting a few more from other sources to compare.

You shouldn't loose hope, I'm telling you, they always pin sooner or later. First wave can be ugly though, with those pins in the corner. All my jars and boxes are fruiting now, some were three or for months till pins

I set my shoebox into a mono tub with a little water in the bottom and a single fogger disk about a week ago. Been dialling it in. The newer fruits caps aren’t curling up and the older fruits aren’t curling up any more than they already were.

However - over the last 2 days some of the older fruits stipes are bluing. Is this a sign that they are ready to take? Or maybe they aren’t as happy as I hoped they were? I dunno.

My question is though, what are the signs to look out for that tell us the fruits are ready to take?

Some of these new clusters are growing waaay faster than previous growth. It’s amazing actually how resilient these things are. This box has taken quite a beating really.

That was my first assumption and it makes perfect sense. I took the mp tape off the hole closest to them a few days ago as a bit of an experiment and put it back on a day later.

Sir Psycho, how do you gauge when to pick your fruits? Most of these blue guys are a little over 2 weeks since they popped up.
