I never had an issue with a standard kitchen lighter. Not only did it get the needle red hot, but it could get it white hot if I held it on there for long enough. No contams either.
Sure, there's probably stuff that's better, but it's not rocket science. Most anything will work fine.

Um, to be technical the science being discussed directly relates to rocket science as rocket science basic principles start out with combustion factors.

OP, if you want to properly sterilize your equipment, use the proper source for the energy required to do so.
Wax candles, bic lighters, matches, etc, are not suitable for sterilizing utensils. Why? Because they're dirty sources of energy which fall well short of the energy required to transfer heat evenly, efficiently, at the appropriate temperature.
Use a butane torch lighter if you must, but the other options are foolish.
As for the pic above: you just had that pic preloaded and ready to fire off? Doubts.
My IR sterilizer reaches 815°C (1500°F). Clean/efficient source of heat. Despite such even/efficient heat transfer, my scalpel takes about 12 seconds to reach temps.
Quote:
Burning match – For such a small flame, a household match burns at around 600-800°C.
Match surface area means loss of energy, it would be a dirty eternity for a scalpel.
It takes forever to properly/evenly heat a scalpel blade with an alcohol lamp:
Quote:
The flame produced is short and wide, and uniformly hot throughout. It is capable of producing temperatures up to 2500° F.
Ask yourself why one would be favorable over another.
Quote:
SIEVERT MAPP Gas Cylinder is the premium choice of fuel to work efficiently. A flame temperature of up to 3600°F gives the optimum burning performance and shorter working times.
This is by far the best and most thorough reply in this thread, to try and argue against it because you got a few grows under your belt is quite foolish.

I'm not only posting to answer the OP, nor am I being argumentative, as some clearly mistake me for. I post as accurately as I can for sake of the lurkers, and search function warriors sifting through all the bullshit.
Jokes aside, fun is fun, but when noobs have to sift through an encyclopedia of bullshit to find one nugget of truth, I do my best to be that nugget.

Thanks guys. Just to be on the safe side, alcohol torch next time.
I was trying to get a fast answer as I was about to inoculate 8 jars with 4 syringes and really wanted it to work... I ended up just using 4 extra sterile syringe tips to be sure it was sterile since this was my first time making grains and jars on my own as opposed to just ordering a bag of grains.

Don't buy an alcohol torch just buy a butane torch and some butane.
Also if you are talking about spore syringes you need back up and do some reading.
