I've always wondered if our Broad Street Pump incident would come in the form of plastics.
I know plants like tobacco are known to bio-accumulate heavy metals from soils. Animals and plants already doing the same thing with plastics.

I know we are basically doomed, but it bothers me knowing this. I can't just inoculate some bedding in an off-brand used container knowing fungus can consume portions of containers and bio-accumulate the forever chemicals.

I'm sure this probably isn't a huge issue in America, especially with standardized products, but dang, its still normal plastics.

Wastewater treatment plant operator from the United States here. Pfas and Pfoa and other "forever chemicals" are a huge deal here.
https://www.epa.gov/pfas/pfas-explained
Though there is ongoing research on how to address the problem, the truth is we really don't know what to do right now.
You can query "pfas destruction" and find a number of articles where it has been accomplished in a lab. Here's one:
https://www.clarkson.edu/news/clarkson-university-professor-featured-science-and-technology-magazine-work-destruction-solid
The scalability of this technology is just not there yet. We've been manufacturing these chemicals for a long time and they are Everywhere.
Yeah, maybe we are doomed!
