condensation during colonization in monotub
    #18639119 - 07/31/13 01:17 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

2 monotubs are colonizing somewhere in Africa... they're 5 days into it the tubs are 64qt with a coir/verm/spawn mix, 6 hole with poly fill and wrapped in a black trash bag tied off.

I checked progress today got spotty myc on top looks good but there is a lot of condensation in both tubs.

I put the bags back on but cut i few slits in them thinking it would help

any other recommendations?

Take the bag off, tape the holes if they aren't taped already, and don't worry about condensation.

Should i cover them with anything? they are clear tubs don't I need to keep light away during colonization to prevent early pinning?

Nope.  That's old info.

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

Thanks for the info. I colonize at higher temps 80-82f with great/quick results.

Sorry for necropost/replying/quoting but i think this is important:

Low temps indeed result in meatier fruits but also in higher concentration of alkaloids because in the early stage of the fruit life is where the most of them is produced.

Basically if you want QUALITY incubate and fruit in the lower end of temps,if you want quantity and you are in a hurry do it in the high end of temps(at a risk of A LOT HIGHER contamination rates). This only apply to cubes as far i know. And that is why abort has higher concentration than a fully mature fruit body.

And as a rule of thumb if you are comfy in just a shirt in the room then cube are too.
