Uncle Ben Tek question...

Two weeks ago, I inoculated some Rice bags. I checked them today and they haven't started colonizing yet. Should I try re-innoculating them with a different strain?

No, you should throw them away and do PFTek with your MS syringes. UB is a shitshow.

I looked at previous postings by you. It would be useful for you to take a look at the pf-tek (link in my signature) and give it a try (follow procedure without taking shortcus). Pf-tek is very forgiving if you follow the instructions.

Hi. I read your pf tek. Unfortunately, there's too much stuff needed. I'm a retiree living on a fixed income.

Read through your posts. You have experience with pre-made grow bags and kits and even mention growing 25 years ago. Can I ask why you're looking at Uncle Ben's? Is it just a cost thing? If so you'll save money not using those bags of rice and doing pf tek.

If you don't have a pressure cooker you can steam them. If you can't get verm, you can use coco instead. Probably the most expensive part that is hard to avoid buying are the jars - but a dozen widemouth 1/2pt jars from walmart is still only about $12 and can produce a pretty amazing amount of fruits for the personal consumer.
These are 3 PFtek cakes done by Mateja - his Water Tub tek is highly recommended for fruiting PFtek cakes. It's super simple, cheap and very low maintenance.

I spent less than $50 when I did pf-tek for the first time. I already had a pot with a tight fitting lid. A 5000k to 6500k Light Bulb and 24 hr timer are not needed. I just use the diffuse daylight that goes through the curtains in a room. There's light during the day, it is dark at night. I don't buy brown rice flour, I just pulverize brown rice in a blender. I don't have a SAB (still air box). I just take out the books from a shelf and cover it with plastic film that I sliced in a couple of places to transfer jars in and out and use it in place of a still air box. A bag of vermiculite is less than $10 and it lasts for many growths. Instead of using a SGFC or water tub I shred the pf-tek cakes and mix them with coir to place in a shoebox. A shoe box is less than $5.
Just trying to indicate that it is not as expensive as it seems. At the end of the day it will be your choice. But it works almost every time I try to grow mushrooms without problems. And I say almost because a couple of times I didn't steam the jars too well, another time I got fungus gnats getting in my jars. But the method is quite forgiving.

SGFC: Shot gun fruiting chamber
A box with holes and filled with wet perlite to provide a humid environment for the mycelium to produce mushrooms. It used to be recommended for fruiting mushrooms but nowadays people recommend a water tub as a more convenient fruiting chamber.
