Let’s Make Each Other Better 4

The reason for this thread, no matter what form of art you create, we can bounce shit off each other, learn from one another and hopefully we can be inspired. Another thing is, if you used to play an instrument, used paint, used to record, used to write, used to... Now is the time to jump back in. The idea is, this thread is not for judging based on personal taste necessarily, but rather providing honest feedback to help each other reach our stated goal
Example, for me I am trying to learn about mixing music, I would love to share an idea and have honest feedback about the mix. If you think the mix sounds muddy and shitty I wanna know what you think etc. A place to feel completely free and practice. If you have been feeling like you want to learn an instrument, carving, drawing, or anything, we can also share tips and tricks we have learned along the way.
I’m bringing this up partly because if you are an artist and your not producing, it is not good for us. We need to exercise that part of us or it nags deep within. We can inspire each other to practice more too. Let’s face it, if we don’t practice, we won’t improve
What if you used to paint? You can start by setting up a work space, re-up on supplies. Carve out a studio. A place that is yours to be creative. When I record music I am in a place where I want to be, It’s a second home, even though it’s just half a room. It is where I go to disappear and try things.
The idea is to grow something no matter what it is, while being true to ourselves. Skill level is not the thing at all, it ain’t about that shit. Art is an amazing thing and if you got the itch then let’s scratch it. We can share our little steps and progress, encourage each other to keep practicing. And taking as much time as we need to learn new things
There is no limit, there is no gate fee. A garden of art, Some things grow and some things die, won’t know unless we try. If anyone is game I’m in. I love the shroomery and I feel like there are so many shroomerites here that are so talented. Don’t sleep, or sleep if you wanna

It took me a long time to realize that nagging feeling was just part of who I am and I need to deal with it by just making music, even if I'm not in the mood really. I always am content afterwards. Even if I do like only five minutes of work, it's something.
I like the vibe and idea of this thread. Let's get it poppin'!

I hear you on that, and it’s so true about feeling better after If it is a part of us, stuffing it down never feels good. When I was in my twenties I had a lot of awesome experiences playing and working with music. I kinda feel like I had my fun and I’m content with it. But I will never stop writing and learning about it cause it’s good for the brain, body and soul. Plus you never know what will come up and it is good to have the chops in order, at least somewhat. There were times in my thirties when I didn’t play for a few years and I did not do well at all
I’m gonna ramble for a min. Alright, I tried something different. Normally I write at random times. But the past two weeks I’ve gotten up earlier, coffee and record at least a 30 min writing session. Steam of consciousness with my acoustic guitar, no pressure with no expectations. I did this for ten days and the past few days I’ve been going back through the recordings. And I feel like I wrote the equivalent of blah blah blah lol.
Some mornings I wake and bake and some mornings no wake and bake something I noticed, for me anyway, the times I smoked before writing, way too much fucking around nonsense. The times with just coffee seemed more focused on an idea and things fell more into a groove at least. I thought the opposite would happen
Even though I didn’t come up with much that I like, I have decided I’m going to do it again. This time I will be more relaxed I think. More able to forget the recorder is on and just play. Normally I will play and when something emerges, then I record it so I don’t forget. When the recorder is on the whole time it can fuck with me head, even though it’s a scratch track. So I’m going to do morning sessions rain or shine for the next week and see what happens.
I’m curious to know how you guys write, I’m always looking for tips and suggestions. This applies beyond music too IMO. To me, there is little difference between staring at a blank fretboard and staring at a blank page
Real quick, I have found a good way for me to gain inspiration is to learn a new song. Maybe something I’ve always wanted to learn but just never have. It’s a good way to jump back in!

I'll be back to respond properly, but agreeing with these sentiments! Back to the DAW, I love making music but sometimes the computer aspect is a drag, especially when your workflow looks like mine
Dank thread Hertz, maybe even get some inter-shroomery colloboration through this...

P.S don't get me started on weed and music creation how can the dream combo be such a nightmare sometimes

Great thread! I took piano lessons when I was younger but stopped when puberty kicked in full force and diverted my attention to other hobbies.
I never forgot how to read music and play the start of a couple songs sloppily. So I decided to buy a full scale keyboard to relearn some songs years back. Learned a couple songs but ultimately was not consistent enough to keep them memorized or get much better. Until about a year ago. Now I practice every day even if just for five minutes.
And the past few months I decided to try and write my own piano music. Now I’m really hooked. I’m finishing up my fourth song now and can hear the start of a fifth!
Anybody else feel like they start to lose their sanity and feel possessed by whatever it is that you’re creating? I start to get loads of energy, can’t sleep, thought patterns change and I get the obsessive desire to find out where the musical pattern leads me.
It’s a fun time!

What’s up dude! Your excitement about writing makes me excited Enjoyed reading your post. I know what you mean by obsessing about a project or song! “The obsessive desire to find out where the musical pattern leads me.” Beautiful, I love that.
Note - holy shit! Giant thunderstorm rolling in right now, I’m under the deck right now having a beer and a lightning strike just hit way too close, I’m moving my ass inside. I gotta put the bloody awning up, I have more thoughts and will be around later, keep being awesome y’all

I am in my early thirties and feel like I'm still going up to whatever musical peak I can achieve. I have my first single from my new album releasing July 27, so that's cool. It's my first time getting on streaming platforms.
I do find that coffee helps me a lot with transposing ideas from my head onto a medium that can capture them. I write down any musical idea that comes to mind that sounds like it has potential, such as new song name or description of a vibe. I also will record myself humming or beatboxing; beatboxing is useful for making complex dubstep beats.
Speaking of thunderstorm, I was on vacation in New Bern, NC and we got a nasty storm, lost power for several hours. But I have such a peaceful vibe from the trip, it was so relaxing. I feel like a Buddha who has reached Nirvana.

I appreciate this! You know, I’ve never recorded an idea by humming it. Seems like a good way to do it. Do you hum bass lines and melodies or what? Just curious. Beatboxing and humming bring a very human element to your process too, wow so cool man

Haha nice I’ve lost power a couple times this past week, had some big t-storms come through knocking trees down. I agree when the power goes out it can be quite peaceful, acoustic instruments come in handy then

I think I normally hum the melodies. In dubstep the bass is the melody usually, so in a way humming dubstep is super easy and basic compared to other genres, I think. Yea I literally will just replay video of me beatboxing/humming and just try to recreate it in my DAW.

Wow, I like EDM, I just don’t know all the nuances. Dude forever and always, “Underwater” beautiful man, just sayin. The way your playing the piano melody, raw & real. I’ve been doing me morning sessions and writing. Life has been busy af recently. No matter which genre one is writing in, it can be hard to remember, whatever your doing is your fingerprint and to just let go. The same 12 notes, different octaves, but the same notes. Now what? Your fingerprints, that’s what, unique to you
