I wanna make music 3

Hi,
as the subject line already indicates, I want to make music.
As a child I used to play the piano, till I hit puberty and got interested in other things.
Now, that I got older, listened to many different genres, I would love to spend my time creating music just for myself.
Currently I am heavily into electronic ambient music and I wonder what would be needed to create my own stuff. Is there any good program out there I could use to practice with? Preferably for free? Just like Gimp being basically a free version of Photoshop?
I'd be grateful for any input.

I had the same exact experience with the piano. A few years ago I ended up buying a full scale keyboard and started learning/re learning some songs. Just recently I started writing and playing my own piano music and now I’m addicted similarly to when I was a kid.
With that said unfortunately the only audio program I know a little bit about is audacity. From what I understand it’s only for recording from instruments. Best of luck!

Thanks man, maybe I should look into buying a second hand keyboard too... Not too long ago I tried to play the last piece that I played on the piano, before I quit on a friend's keyboard. I was surprised how quickly I got back into it after such a long time.
I guess I will look into both options. Thanks again.

You could buy a sample collection CD and make your own sounds by modification using Audacity. It would be low-cost
Another option is to buy a electric piano and record your playing/sound/loops with Audacity.
Usually Music Production programs are pretty spendy. To do it for cheap would probably be the best bet.
Ive seen some cheap music production programs for sale on eBay. Never tried them but they are under $20 so might be worth trying out
Im planning on getting into production soon. Maybe after the Summer. We'll see
Edit: I just bought this. Why not! Lets try it out! Cheap DAW Software

Thanks everyone, I will definitely check out all suggestions. I might end up buying a program after all, depending on how much it costs though.

So I got that $10 audio production in the mail recently. It has a cool layout and lots of plug ins. However, the sounds it produces sound AWFUL! Like 8-bit retro awful. Welp, I learned my lesson. Im gonna stick to the professional programs....ya get what you paid for....
Might go with this MAGIX Music Maker 2024 for $65
Ive used the MAGIX Video Editor before and it was awesome! Cost about $70 back in 2015 or so. Great software, highly recommended.
Im confident this Music Maker has to be at least decent based on my previous experience with their video editing software.

LC, have you ever used any of the more popular DAWs like FL, Logic, Ableton, etc.? I'm curious how you compare those to the one you mentioned because I've never heard of it.

Hi mate, music is a big part of my life & I know a bit about production.
I'd recommend getting a cracked version of either Ableton or Logic Pro if you don't want to splash out as they're quite expensive ..watching a few tutorials, then working with the built in synths & effects.
Just bare in mind there's a learning curve with production software but try to enjoy the process, you'll get there eventually.
EDIT: might be worth getting free trial versions of each & see which you prefer the flow of now that I think of it. I know a lot of people that spent years learning a particular software only to realise they prefer something else.
