going on vacation...
    #2838885 - 06/29/04 07:17 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

murphy's law has come into play yet again this month, and I have a pretty good question for anyone here that has been in a similar situation:

My cakes (PF Tek method) first started pinning about 2 days ago. This is my very first time with this, and I am pretty happy with the outcome, I only lost one cake to contamination (4 left).

Anyways, I expect the cakes to all be ready to harvest in about 4-5 days. Problem is, I am going on vacation in 4-5 days, and I will be gone for 2 WEEKS!!!!

What should I do? Is there a way to "pause" the process? Someone told me to put the cakes in a bag, in the fridge, then put them, as they were when I come back.

I am tempted to have someone watch over them for me, and harvest / flush them as needed, although I am not too trusting of a person... (they might mess it up, or decide to compensate themselves....)

anyways, suggesstions, please. I leave on the 3rd.

thanks, I will do that then.

Just to be sure, when I come back in 10 days from then, I just take them out the fridge, and set it all back like it was?

How long does it take to get back into the process, and is there any kind of "shock" that could take place?

I am veerryyy verryy new at all of this, but I plan on being a helpful addition to the community here.

please stay with me on this, because as I said, it's my first time.

They will be good to harvest in about 4 days from now, I am pretty sure (I took them from their jars 2-3 days ago, and PF Tek says 7-10 days).

Now the drunking thing is a little confusing still, I'm pretty sure after I do it once I'll know more about it, but basically, I cut all the grown caps off the cakes, soak all 4 cakes for 12 hours in CLEAN water, then put them back in the terrarium right before I leave?

So then 10 days later I will have more to harvest when I walk in the door?

My terrarium is probably not perfect, I have a 3x4x2 ft clear rubbermain container, with a snap-on top that's also clear.

I put an entire bag of perlite on the bottom, put the cakes on top of the perlite, and put about 40oz of water in the bottom, so that the perlite is all stuck together, but still dry on top. I expose them to about 10-20 minutes of light (via bathroom lamp) per day, and it stays fairly humid in there.

I just read today that air flow is important, so I took the top off for the first time in 3 days, and sort of "fanned" the air out, added another 8oz cup of water.

Everything seems to be going fine. I will post pictures soon, is this the right place to post them??

ok, well I kept them in the jars until I saw pinning, then I put them all into the fruiting chamber (all except for 1 cake was already pinning).

here are pictures of the first cake that showed progress.

There are 2 others with small pins, and one without any. Should I allow the ones already fruiting to go as far as possible, harvest, then put them all in the fridge? Or should I just put them all in now? I am tempted to pick that huge one and just chew on it. haha I am excercising more patience than I even knew I had for this whole project.

btw, the pictures, that cake was taken from the jar 3 days ago.

So the day I leave (the 4th) would be the 9th day (just about) for that cake.

The other 2 would be on their 7th days, and the last one on its 6th.

ok. thanks for the help so far!

first off, h202.. hehe I regret to inform you I got a d+ in chemistry. I recognize the h20 part. where can I get h202? household materials? walmart? What is a commercial name? sorry for being such a newbie to all this... I am a computer geek, organics are a new world to me, I have failed miserably with plants in the past (to include mj and salvia divinorum amoung others).

so to make sure all is clear, take the ones not fruiting (to include the ones with very small pins?), put them back into the 1/2 pint mason jars, and put them in the fridge until I get back?

or put them in the fridge with the solution tonight, put them back in to grow before I leave, and harvest when I get back?

again, I am amazed at the poor timing in which this all came into play

ok I will go put at least that one without any pins in the fridge now (in the 1/s pint jar, inside a ziplock.. right?)

If there are some very SMALL pins (maybe 2 - 3) on a cake, just put it in the fridge still?

again, thanks to you cats for being helpful
