Wet Bubble ? Bacteria ? Metabolites ?
    #25898638 - 03/26/19 06:11 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Spawned 6 shoeboxes on 3/17. 4 out of 6 have developed a strange yellow color near the top of the substrate.

Spawned to straight coir with top layer of coir applied during spawning. Only misted 1 or two times. Following hamloaf’s WBS tek, and Bod’s coir and shoebox tek.

The 4 pics below are the suspicious ones. All Golden Teacher 6 transfers away from spores.

This one was spawned like the rest and at the same time.  Has an amazing pinset. Literally pins everywhere!  :psychsplit:  1qt gt spawn and 1qt coir

Treasure Coast  T2 also spawned with the rest. Can’t tell if it’s stalled or just didn’t colonize the top. When you apply a casing at spawn do you typically expect it to colonize?

Also, here’s a pic of my first ever shoebox/bulk project. Spawned 3/5

The yellowing? Is that wat your concerned about? I thnk that is the myc fighting bacterial contamination.

Yeah that’s what I’ve been wondering about, the yellowing. I’d guess the same that it’s just metabolites fighting off light-ish bacterial contams. I suppose I’m just hoping to verify this doesn’t look like a bad contam situation that should be tossed out.

If it is just bacteria I believe this indicates I need to improve my agar work sterile technique. This probably didn’t happen from opening the lid to take a peak like once a day right? (I know that’s not good practice anyway though)

I agree too that they’re probably too wet.  I may have misted too heavily (yesterday). They were starting to get dry on the surface though.

Mist from a couple feet back about 10 times, if you do it too close itll mat it down, you want the substrate wet, not the myc.

Thanks! That’s basically the opposite of what I’ve been doing  I’ll give that a try next time

Nah dont toss them homie.
On that TC, you did a pseudo casing at spawn? Is that jst coir?
Yeah, i wud expect that to colonize like the rest of the sub, Prolly within a week with healthy myc.

And ya knw, i have to say that im not great at this stuff yet. But i used an actual casing on my PE and it really helps to maintain proper surface conditions. Cuz i'll fucking mist and peak fucking six times a day and mess it up. With an actual casing, as long as the top of the casing doesnt turn light brown (dry) then it's fine, and that takes a lot of the guess work out of it for me, basiclly cuz i aint that good at shrooms yet.
Only great in bed
 :jennajameson:

Yeah that was a pseudo casing  on the TC, just coir. I’m not sure when most people do their casings. I’d like to see some more posts on that topic... I’ve heard that opinions on this vary widely from person to person. My first shoebox (spawned 3/5) had no casing! I will keep trying new methods for when to apply a casing too see what works best for me

What I like to do is spray the mist above me and the tub, then the mist dissipates and lightly sprinkles the sub

Yeah, an actual casing goes on after your sub is fully colonized. I like to use 1:1:+ peat/verm/hyd lime. It acts different then coir. The myc has a harder time getting through it so it stays as a casing. Plus you patch spots where the myc does come thru.
I dnt have a link to give you but im sure Bod has an explanation on his profile.

Hey, sorry I know this is an old thread, but I have a tub going that looks very similar to some of yours, so wanted to know how it turned out for you or if anyone has any advice for how I should proceed? Everything was looking really healthy but once the top got colonised I realised it was pooling with way too much water and dabbed it up with paper towels. It’s now looking like this… thanks in advance for any help!
