keeping martha cool

im buying a martha soon and live in AZ. im not really concerned about keeping things warm, but rather keeping things cool. i know a small space heater is good for raising temps, but is there a similar thing for lowering temps if need be? (my house is kept at 73 pretty much always so its just for those extra hot days that the ac may not be doin so well)

There are a few of us on this forum that live in the same climate as you. I keep my house around 78f in the summer. No problem. They may be a little more contam resistant at lower temps. But the the mushrooms won't start to complain until you get closer to 88f ime. I have had some tubs start to look pretty miserable when the A/C was on the fritz. Twice. But otherwise, if you are comfortable, so are they.
On the plus side, in a super dry environment like the US desert south west, we seem to struggle less with mold spores in general. Again ime. At least, I never turned off my central AC to use my SAB. I started with agar and grain and didn't struggle much with contams from the very beginning, even when my technique was not on point. I credit that more to environment than natural talent.

i had a martha in a greenhouse about 35c degrees and I grew the biggest mushroom i have seen in it. i wouldn't even worry they grow in tropical areas. As long as proper fae and humidity you don't have to worry, my grow in that greenhouse was the best i ever had as far as yield
you can use ac if you want but it's an expense you don't really need in my opinion unless it's 40+c. You do you man

What are you growing? I see your other question about hardwood pellets. Many gourmets are going to prefer cooler temps. Some may have warm weather varieties that may work your climate. Cubes will have no problems at your temps, but really do not need the tent. Most here assume you’re growing cubes if you ask without specifying.

Fair point, Roscoe. I was thinking of actives when I answered. My Lions Mane does better in the cooler part of the year. Still seldom below 72f then. I can't speak to any other gourmets yet.

i plan on growing shiitake and reishi. sorry for not specifying. if i were to go the route of a small ac unit, would i need any filters of the sort and or would you recommend a certain kinda of unit?

Depends on how you use the AC. I would suggest cool the room the tent is in, not the tent itself. AC will dry out the air, tent needs to be humid, and you will have a ton of condensate to get rid of from the AC unit.
It would be easier to source the warm weather variety of shiitake. I’ve used it, and fruited them into the mid 70’s. I’ve also grown rieshi at those temps. Shiitake will still need a cold shock before fruiting, but that can be done in the fridge.
As an aside, you may have better luck finding info in the gourmet forum. Most of the info here in mush cult is centered around actives. I saw another of your questions asking about rhizo growth on agar, and most gourmets don’t really exhibit rhizomorphic mycelium.
If you haven’t seen it, give it a look: Gourmet and Medicinal

i grew this one in +36-38c with good fae. I should mention that I think you would want AC for gourmets.
