Learn something: A place for random knowledge * 5
    #28392267 - 07/11/23 09:20 AM (10 months, 2 days ago)

A thread to post those cool and random things we've seen/read. Videos, papers, and articles on science or history are welcome here. It never gets dull to learn something new, discussion is encouraged! Thread will self destruct when we've learned everthing.

I'll kick things off with a new series from a channel I found way back when searching for mushroom growing vids. They've done a ton of cool projects. Their latest is learing to grow rat neurons to play doom. Yes.

Right?! Wonder if the something similar can be done with mycelium just to monitor its signals. There was one guy that hooked a music synthesizer up to oyster mushrooms I think.

A few months ago I came across an article about research into building mushroom computers. It's crazy to think about, but it sounds like we could eventually be able to train mushrooms to play Doom!

My new favourite thread ATM!
Got me on those 'Dots' 'Squonk' and 'Pandoras Box' videos at about 4am...
Great stuff, cozmyc. (Side note- I'd thought your username was: COZY-MYC then I read it as 'COSMIC' and got my mind blown apart... I think I really gotta get some sleep lol:lmafo:)
A few (hopefully not too many in one go) varied contributions here:

^
First comes from a channel whos simple eye catching visual style and choice of topics has kept my brain sparked up on the tail end of countless long LSD excursions in the past: Kurzgesagt!
This one about intelligence is one of my favourites :awesomenod:

^Next, for the Twin Peaks fans out there- the story on the process of how  that most iconic theme was written.
"THAT'S IT! That's so beautiful! ANGELO! That's tearing my heart out!" gets me every time
:tearchalice:
Rest in peace, Angelo.

^
Now, I'm not sure if this next one is simply a propaganda video from 'Big Biscuit' to keep us subserviant in our consumption, or if it's how Oreos are ACTUALLY unmade, either way it's a fascinating insight for anyone who has ever wondered about the technique behind powerslammers and the extraction methods performed by commercial Wizards.

^
Closing off with some crazy nature stuff, 'Mysteries of the Twilight Zone' by Natural World Facts. He has recently collaborated with the Schmidt Ocean Institute for a dank, 5 part, 4k series  (I cannot for the life of me get it to embed without it being 1:54 in....)

Hope there's something in here for all you curious-cats.
Enjoy!
:peaceout:

^Those were each a good watch :yesnod:
Oldest Aliens was cool but DAAAAMN that light polarization one was something!
In terms of inspiration, I imagine now you're gonna have big fuckin tubes of sugarwater about the house with lamps set up.
Maybe even an ambient light system wherein you employ someone to twist the filter in real time in order to match whatever backlight colour occurs while you play videogames or watch films etc

3Blue1Brown done a good job in making it palatable for science-noobs, especially 3 to 6 minutes in- fascinating description/action that was easy to follow.
Really brought home how little I know or even wonder about light in a literal sense...

My offering is some insight to the OG Sampler: the Mellotron.
Always been quite into the sound of these things, evocative of a sort of warm, wobbly, hazy nostalgia that slight tape degradation seems to bring IMO (it applies to VHS quality or tracking too, I think).

Some further Mellotron watching if the mood takes you.
And for anyone who works with DAWs, there's a nice rendering of it on Arturias "Analog lab 4"

That'd be cool :awesomenod: my mind first went to a handheld, oil lantern style instead of a desk or standing lamp.
:vaped:
Could set loads of rows up and manipulate the colour spectrum to some music as a visualiser.

Raw gems don't have a lot of value until they're cut and as such they act like liquid assets. This is because the price of cutting them can be undercut with cheap foreign labor like the lapidary factories in Vietnam.

Fossicking for gems yourself isn't profitable, you need a mining claim and a lot of capital to start anything. The real way to make money is to buy cheap raw gems, ship them overseas for cutting, and sell them at major profit.

It might cost $70 to cut a gem in Australia, but under $10 in Vietnam.

It's the same with opal, you could find a good single piece, but the seams are often 40ft below potch. The capital needed to invest in a mining claim is 6 figures. You can meet local miners and trade raw material for cheap, still thousands, then refine and polish the pieces and create a large markup.

A high quality $3000 raw piece can be sold for $7000 once polished.

This does take time and attention to detail to accomplish and is a higher value lapidary skill.

I think it highlights how raw jewellery operates as a business. I also am starting to believe that is is a good thing to have as much aware of what making a good business decision involves. To learn how a business operates, what practices they specialise in, and by what means they balance productivity.

I'd like to try and make some, we have a farm that sells unpasteurized milk in town. Buttermilk biscuits are bussin.

My grandpa used to drink buttermilk with sardines. I drank it with him as a kid. I still love sardines.
I love this entire thread.

Did you guys know there’s a cure for hiccups?

All you do is have a glass of water. You pull a paper towel taught over it. You tighten it down with some rubber bands.

Then you drink through the paper towel. So that you have to suck the water through it.

Apparently hiccups are an entirely pressure based issue. By doing that, you reset the thing that was going wrong. You completely cured your hiccups.

I recently found that dried dates clean the palet extremely well after eating pickled cucumbers and vice versa. Even together they complement eachother to a point, just not in excess.

I ain't falling for your tomfoolery again.

Here's some random knowledge, whatever food combos are posted here, doesn't mean you've got to copy those comments into your thread!

Custard and energy drinks taste good but shouldn't be mixed, and eating too much brie cheese has the same effect as eating too many warheads or pinapple.

Did you know?
That the disease, ebola can all be traced back to a single tree.

This tree was deep in the darkest patch of forest in the jungles of Africa.

Due to illegal deforestation.
Lumberjacks were out working in the forest when the first one was bitten by a particularly sick and aggressive bat, that flew out from this tree…

To this day, this is one of the most destructive diseases.
We don’t know how long it was out there in the woods.
If we hadn’t been chopping down the forest, it would still be waiting out there.

Originally the foot fetish was first observed during
The bubonic plague.
It is a mental state of still finding someone very attractive. While actually being very unattracted to the parts of them that would make you sick.
Interesting, isn’t it?
This was also why milk maiden’s were suddenly considered sex icons.
Believe it or not. There’s actually something called cowpox. Milk maidens had been exposed to this disease numerous times because they worked on the farm. So when people started dying of smallpox. They never caught it…
The perception of them being some super healthy, fertile, beautiful goddess, was based off of the fact that they never got sick from the smallpox epidemic.
Isn’t that fun?

Did you know that wasps become aggressive because of their diet?
Quote:

GenesisCorrupted said:
There is actually a flaw that wasps made a long time ago. They eat meat.
So over the course of the year. As their brain fills with holes. They become very aggressive. To a point where they’re just attacking anything. It’s a seasonal thing.

Wasp safe nest removal:
You can smoke it. Once the smoke gets them nice and docile. You can try to remove it yourself and just go ditch it out in the forest. Be careful, and wear lots of clothing to protect yourself. A beekeeper mask would be very well advised. But with my advice. You’d be able to take care of this yourself. And the problem would be permanently solved. But yeah, you need to start a fire like right in front of this drain pipe. And then fan all that smoke from all that green stuff you’re burning. You want a lot of smoke. Right onto that nest. Put it in a box.  Then when you are out in the forest. Grab that piece of tape that’s keeping the box close. Then get ready to run when you rip it off.

I want to share some dietary info related to our biology that has alleviated some serious temporary concerns.

You see.. over the years, I've managed to accidentally turn my turds 5 different colours.

I can turn my turds black, green, red, yellow or purple with dietary choices.

Fortunately it was just due to the foods I was indulging in, but it's good to know now.

Heres the secret recipe to colouring with turds.
  • Oreos - black
  • Food colouring - bile green
  • Watermelon - fleshy red
  • Sweet potato - vibrant yellow
  • Red dragon fruit - bloody purple

Note this is the result of excessive consumption of such foods, like 1kg + of sweet potato. That shit's delicious

This is a method for killing the desert.
I’m not talking about the naturally existing desert. I’m talking about the encroaching desert that is destroying Iceland.
It is being single-handedly killed by a invasive plant called blue lupine.
It produces a lot of nitrogen into the soil, allowing reforestation of an otherwise desolated area.
It also happens to be quite gorgeous.

This is still an invasive species. It does have potential for destruction as well. But I must say it is incredibly satisfying, watching something take back land from desert.

Did you know that the Romans used to rinse out their mouth with urine to make their teeth white? They also washed their hair with it to make it softer and shinier.

In fact, it was so prevalent for a while there. That people with nasty black & yellow teeth would laugh at people with white teeth. Because it usually meant they swished their mouth out with pee.

"Dear children"
:havesomescience:
At first I thought: "Oh sick, a nearly 2 hour video about brumshtein sulfur..."
But I'm glad I got round to watching- Dr.Andrew Szydlo is a fuckin gem man!
What a captivating & entertaining guy, the chemistry teacher all curious minds of the world deserve IMO.
I had no idea sulfur was so multifaceted.
Really ought to take more time to look into basic science beyond my specific interests...
Then again, pretty sure I said that about the light tube vids too though lol. (I bet these demostrations pave the way for so many of the kids in the audience to go on their own 'Curiosity Voyages' to quote Dustin)

Came across this for the first time in years (the song is actually fuckin great too), which lead me to:

Those oscilliscope vids blow my mind, they feel like the (infinitely more musical) predescessor to the "Drawing stuff on piano roll by playing" ones you may have seen around (I'm SO SORRY for linking a youtube short. Utter filth of a format.)

Next up- a masterclass in toptier stop motion animation courtesy of some of the OGs: Aardman Animation.

Love the glass staircase bit, as well as everything to do with keeping the scale of models proportionate.

Did you know?
That there used to be no thornbushes on the Hawaiian islands?
Introducing.
Father Bachelot
He looked over the land he was attempting to convert, and it was a paradise. People had no need for the Catholic God. They didn’t even have a need for shoes.
So he decided that “savages” shouldn’t get to have something so perfect. They would need to suffer so they would be driven to his God and clothing. Many many layers of clothing.
So he opened the bilge underneath of his boat.
This is where people would throw stones and dirt just to add weight underneath the ship so It could sail. There were thornbushes in there that he threw out over the beach. He did this because he thought it would urge them to wear clothes and shoes.
They grow there to this day because of one hateful racist person.
