Learn something: A place for random knowledge * 5
    #28392267 - 07/11/23 09:20 AM (6 months, 14 days ago)

A thread to post those cool and random things we've seen/read. Videos, papers, and articles on science or history are welcome here. It never gets dull to learn something new, discussion is encouraged! Thread will self destruct when we've learned everthing.

I'll kick things off with a new series from a channel I found way back when searching for mushroom growing vids. They've done a ton of cool projects. Their latest is learing to grow rat neurons to play doom. Yes.

A few months ago I came across an article about research into building mushroom computers. It's crazy to think about, but it sounds like we could eventually be able to train mushrooms to play Doom!

My new favourite thread ATM!
Got me on those 'Dots' 'Squonk' and 'Pandoras Box' videos at about 4am...
Great stuff, cozmyc. (Side note- I'd thought your username was: COZY-MYC then I read it as 'COSMIC' and got my mind blown apart... I think I really gotta get some sleep lol:lmafo:)
A few (hopefully not too many in one go) varied contributions here:

^
First comes from a channel whos simple eye catching visual style and choice of topics has kept my brain sparked up on the tail end of countless long LSD excursions in the past: Kurzgesagt!
This one about intelligence is one of my favourites :awesomenod:

^Next, for the Twin Peaks fans out there- the story on the process of how  that most iconic theme was written.
"THAT'S IT! That's so beautiful! ANGELO! That's tearing my heart out!" gets me every time
:tearchalice:
Rest in peace, Angelo.

^
Now, I'm not sure if this next one is simply a propaganda video from 'Big Biscuit' to keep us subserviant in our consumption, or if it's how Oreos are ACTUALLY unmade, either way it's a fascinating insight for anyone who has ever wondered about the technique behind powerslammers and the extraction methods performed by commercial Wizards.

^
Closing off with some crazy nature stuff, 'Mysteries of the Twilight Zone' by Natural World Facts. He has recently collaborated with the Schmidt Ocean Institute for a dank, 5 part, 4k series  (I cannot for the life of me get it to embed without it being 1:54 in....)

Hope there's something in here for all you curious-cats.
Enjoy!
:peaceout:

Have you ever seen a 9-gigapixel map of the Milky Way galaxy? This jaw-dropping zoomable image by ESO contains ~84 million stars and it's unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

The original image has 24.6 gigabytes: https://buff.ly/R1dS5X

This is a tweet, though can't imbed. The image in the tweet zooms out automatically. The image at https://www.eso.org/public/images/eso1242a/zoomable/ you can manually zoom very far in.

How it's unmade is great, "powerful fans keep them cool." lol.

^Those were each a good watch :yesnod:
Oldest Aliens was cool but DAAAAMN that light polarization one was something!
In terms of inspiration, I imagine now you're gonna have big fuckin tubes of sugarwater about the house with lamps set up.
Maybe even an ambient light system wherein you employ someone to twist the filter in real time in order to match whatever backlight colour occurs while you play videogames or watch films etc

3Blue1Brown done a good job in making it palatable for science-noobs, especially 3 to 6 minutes in- fascinating description/action that was easy to follow.
Really brought home how little I know or even wonder about light in a literal sense...

My offering is some insight to the OG Sampler: the Mellotron.
Always been quite into the sound of these things, evocative of a sort of warm, wobbly, hazy nostalgia that slight tape degradation seems to bring IMO (it applies to VHS quality or tracking too, I think).

Some further Mellotron watching if the mood takes you.
And for anyone who works with DAWs, there's a nice rendering of it on Arturias "Analog lab 4"

It's the same with opal, you could find a good single piece, but the seams are often 40ft below potch. The capital needed to invest in a mining claim is 6 figures. You can meet local miners and trade raw material for cheap, still thousands, then refine and polish the pieces and create a large markup.

A high quality $3000 raw piece can be sold for $7000 once polished.

This does take time and attention to detail to accomplish and is a higher value lapidary skill.

I think it highlights how raw jewellery operates as a business. I also am starting to believe that is is a good thing to have as much aware of what making a good business decision involves. To learn how a business operates, what practices they specialise in, and by what means they balance productivity.
