Smelling off without contamination?

Hi all, I couldn’t find much information out there on the topic so I wanted to ask: do funky smells really always=bad/contamination? That’s what a lot of the stuff I’ve read seems to suggest but my tub has had a distinctive smell that is more chemically than mushroomy ever since I first lifted the lid after colonization, and while there were admittedly a lot of aborts (mostly PE mutants), it also produced a ton of large, healthy-looking fruits and still has not began to show any visible signs of contamination. So, is it possible that smells sometimes are due to other things, such as: the brand/material of tape if taping the holes, the material of the filters on the holes, using tub too soon after sanitizing (when is too soon?), etc. etc.? If this is in fact the cause for a smell, is there any harm in continuing to use that product or in consuming the mushrooms? Alternatively, is it possible/probable that there could be contamination or bacteria but that it is not visible to me and is not having a significant impact on the yield?

Funky smells are always a hint on something. Probably yeast/bacteria or maybe extreme lack of gas exchange. Fruits are usually safe to consume. If they aren´t slimy or smell like trash they´re fine.

A fully colonized substrate smells like mushrooms, even if you use horse manure as your main ingredient it will just smell like mush once colonized.
DK where your smell is coming from but if it is persistent then it's probably coming from some sort of organism other than the mushrooms you are growing. Tubs can still produce even if there is something going on, just keep it around till things turn visibly ugly.
Anything suspicious when looking at the underside of the tub?

Ok, thanks! The bottom of the tub and trash bag are both black so I can’t see underneath very well; after I picked the fruits I tried to lift up the cake to peak underneath but what I could see looked like the top…
