Need a bit of help with tomato plants
    #28390414 - 07/09/23 02:39 PM (6 months, 17 days ago)

So I have a four foot vine tomato plant, grown from seeds. As much as most of the fruits look great, a few have some side blossom end rot (blossom side rot?)
So I went to feeding them calcium and lowered nitrogen, but a mixture of high calcium milk and water. From twice every week or so to now three times a week.
Still dealing with it a bit. What happened? I didn't have this problem before for a few years before this annoying situation.

(1.) Is a milk and water calcium feeding not very good?
(2.) Do I have to go to an NPK high ratio fertilizer again, like before they
started flowering/fruiting.
(3.) Do I need to switch to a better fertilizer?
(4.) Could it be the poor clay soil they were planted in? (in the backyard ground)
(5.) Could this vine tomato just be a big-eater, needing a lot of fertilizer and calcium? Never grew this type before.

Please help me out if you can, thank you!

Maybe the magnesium in Epsom salt will help them uptake calcium.

There's thirty different reasons why a plant may develop BER.

It can be as simple as overwatering. It can be as complicated as soil type + cation exchange issues.

Adding some magnesium would be a good start to ruling out calcium uptake issues.

Do you have any other forms of calcium in the soil? Eggshells, oyster shell (or other), kelp, etc?

Thanks guys these are awesome replies!

@TulipSlave no dude, no eggshells or anythting other than freakin' milk-water.
Maybe it is overwatering by the way, I water them a lot because the weather over here gets brutal hot and the soil dries out quickly.

...shoot...

Works great for cannabis that need readily available calcium

Goat milk sprayed onto surfaces is a great way to kill powdery mildews

@TulipSlave  dude that might have been really good advice, slowing down on waterings for them for a few days they already look happier and healthier!

@OP What variety of tomato are you growing? It could be whats on the ground/heat stress/bugs. Mine have been a lot happier up on the porch than on the ground. Try that if you have the space to. I didnt have any luck one year and made that change the next. Keep a log of how many youre able to pick and eat.

Will do keep a log when they are fully ripened. I dunno I can show you
the packet they came in. I know it sounds kinda funny, it just says "Tomatoes on a vine" so I think vine tomatoes. I can show you a picture of the package.

Yeah man good idea, I suspect they don't care much for the heavy clay soil in the backyard. Thanks for your input!
