Has anyone actually tried sterilizing the coir?

I sterilize rye at 15 psi for 120 minuets and mycelium does just fine in 1 quart jars. I pasteurize coir mix, add spawn and it all fruits great, but I get gnats? It must be from the coir...can I sterilize the coir? Thanks.

You can sterilize the coir, but unless youβre buying pre hydrated coir (and more than likely even if you are) the gnats are not coming from that. Make sure your house is clean and clear of any food waste or any other organic matter/sticky spills, take your garbage outside, and treat the drains and plants in your house as those are typical breeding grounds. Fly traps and all that helps too but itβs kinda just a bandaid if you donβt get rid of the root problem

I buy them in 3 pack blocks sold as reptile bedding. I bring the water to a rolling boil, add a block of coir, turn heat off, put the lid back on, come back in the morning. Everything is great I just have gnats...and it's pissing me off. Thanks.

It's not from the coir, clean your house

Is adding bleach to the cool mist a problem?

Cool mist?
Thereβs definitely gnats coming from outside, they wouldnβt be in coir and even using manure they wouldnβt survive pasteurization.
I usually have to deal with a few every summer, vinegar with a couple drops of dish soap in a little jar or condiment cup works really well for me.

Shoe boxes need neither a tent nor a cool mist. Assuming youβre growing cubes.

Elaborate, its been awhile for me. shoe box with inverted shoe box on top? Fanning and misting? I've always been a GH guy with cool mist. I guess I'm way out of date, any chance you have a link? Thanks.

They do just fine on a shelf, even dubbed without needing to be in a humidified gh.

Shoeboxes are literally set and forget, no fanning, no misting. Depending on your environment, just place them anywhere on a shelf, or place them like three in a row in a big monotub if you need better conditions. Have a read here.
