Germinating seeds

I recently attempted to germinate a seed, by placing it in the folds of a wet paper towel, The seed did not crack open in four days. However, a friend of mine came over and told me to fill the bags up with air, is this necessary?

No that isn't nessessary. What kind of seed is it. Some seeds dont germinate well using that method.

I would like to recommend that everyone checks out the book, secrets of plant propagation, available at B/N and Borders bookstores..

if this is a cannabis seed just plant it in the soil, germ teks are rarly necesarry for cannabis. of 100 seeds i think i might experienced 4-5 that havent comed up.

Like shriek said, the paper towel method is useless for cannabis. Maybe if you have some fragile immature seeds it would be useful, but if they are dark and mature, I say just throw them in soil.

hmmm....I have ALWAYS had 100% germ with the paper towel method. I do it a little different though, I put 2-3 layers on either side then put that in a baggie to keep all the moisture in, then I put that on a heating pad on the lowest setting. All my seeds germ in 2-3 days.

I germinate all my bud seeds that i can find and plant them randomly. I bet i could find 20 sprouts around this area that are mine :laugh:

I have germinated hundreds of seeds with the paper towel method and I'm always around 100%. I put them in a tupperware container then wrap it in a towel to keep light out and then just put it somewhere warm. They will start popping as soon as 24 hours, afterwhich the seeds should be checked about every 10 hours to catch sprouts and plant them before they get too long. I've found if you let them turn into bean sprouts they usually don't survive the transplant. If the paper towel dries out at all, give it a good spray with a plant sprayer. Oh, and I only use distilled water. Good luck.
