1st Fruiting; closest to the sun I’ve yet to fly.

Hey y’all. Thanks to everyone who’s helped to get me this far. Special thanks to RR for inspiring me to grow all those years ago…I first watched Let’s Grow Mushrooms over 15 years ago. Today, I’m closer than I’ve ever been to harvesting my very first batch.
Now, labels fell off, so I don’t know if this is Golden Teacher, Jedi Mind Fuck, or perhaps (very small chance) even Burma, but I do know they’re some kinda cube.
My only problem is that I made 5 shoeboxes and experimented with using a lining on a couple of boxes, and didn’t do a lining with 3 others. All but one unlined got hit with trych and every other nasty looking devil under the sun. This guy made it (hope I’m not speaking too soon) and I’m so proud of him.
Getting back to my only problem - the oft debated sidepinning issue. I heard a lot of people say it’s NBD, but it looks like a lot of wasted mushies to me if they can’t get to the top and open up. I don’t know what to do after my first harvest, which I expect will be that one big shroom in the next day or two 🤷🏻♂️

Funny to me that this is definitely NOT Penis envy, considering the phallic nature of many of these lil guys 🤣

A liner is always a good idea. As it comes to the brick shrinking a bit, the liner sticks to it and doesn´t allow microclimate for side pins. Nevertheless there´s some genetics giving a shit about that, and just grow where they want. But generally the surface conditions are very important, up to pinning it should always be coated with tiny water pearls.
Besides that either your substrate is a bit too wet, or you should get your passive airflow a bit up.

Thank you for the reply, Goatrider. Will take all that into consideration next time I spawn these bad boys.
Update: here they are today…a few of them have a weird scoring in their caps, one looks just like a classic bread cross score. Any idea why this would be? Humidity has been at a solid 60-80 the whole time.
Also, holes beneath the cap but before the stem…is that just the cap opening up to show the gills? I’m confused and nervous >.<

Congrats on your recent success! This tub marks the first of many, much more successful flushes! Well done. First, using a liner is good, I recommend it. Using a liner helps reduce side pins, and it also makes the spawning process much easier. (I like to limit how much I handle my spawn and substrate. Mixing your substrate and spawn together in a shake and bake fashion. Less touching= less chance of contamination.
Btw, you can easily harvest the side pins you got going on, make sure your hands are clean and gently pull the plastic away from them while pulling gently left to right and maybe a twisting motion. Once you tear the mycelium at the base, they come right out.
As far as your last concern about the scoring on the cap. Clear indication that they are too dry. (Another thing you’ll often see along with splitting caps is “bluing” of the mycelium or the stems. if they turn blue, pull them they’re done) They’re splitting because there isn’t adequate moisture available to fill the fruiting body. Mist more often and make sure there isn’t a fan running nearby. Your sub need’s moisture, probably want to soak it after you harvest.
If your using agar, now would be the time to take a clone of your best fruit. This is also the time to collect spore prints.
Looks good! Keep it up!
An after thought: if you lost 4 out of 5 tubs to trich, there’s in my opinion a need to be more selective with the quality of your grain spawn. Use only the absolute best looking jars until you get more experienced with identifying problems. Mush love!
