I wanted to share an update to hopefully help others who are starting out.

I’m relatively new (started late Nov, early Dec, 2022). I purchased APE for microdosing on Indigenous peoples day, 2022, and decided to try my hand.

I started off with APE LC and PF tek (by the book) with the SGFC. It turned out decent. I think my biggest problem was letting the mycelium get a bit too hot, and also checking profess way too often, because some mushrooms were growing in the jars before fully colonized. Otherwise I misted the SGFC “regularly” throughout the fruiting stage. Satisfied with about 32g dry.

Next I wanted to replace the SGFC with Water Tub Tek, and my choice was Enigma. I actually started them in the water tub and they were doing fine. First flush was weak. Second flush and they smelled awful, and I had to toss them.

Third go was with Yeti. Similar experience, but they started stinking during the first flush. It was a total loss. So I really think that with the Enigma it was a combination of not incubating long enough, and that I waited too long. With Yeti, I believe they also didn’t colonize long enough.

Fourth attempt was again with Enigma. I got 2 flushes, not thrilled with the quantity. But no stink.

Fifth attempt was back to APE. This time I let them colonize for quite a long time. Also I didn’t keep checking. They colonized for maybe a month, and I just wasn’t impatient.

Water tub tek: originally I was reheating the water to get RH up, every morning. I’d move the cakes aside, pour the water into a bowl, microwave and then replace the cakes. I think that was a bit no-no.

This time I took a mostly hands off approach. I misted according to RH until mushrooms formed - seemed to be taking a long time. Once mushrooms formed I only misted, very lightly maybe every 2 or 3 day, and also fanned.

😯 it’s pretty amazing. The only thing not ideal is that so many were growing under the cakes. The ones on top matured faster and I harvested those yesterday (all but one). Turned those I over. The ones underneath are a little flat and have “fuzzy feet”. But I’m quite excited!

Fuzzy feet are as much down to genetics at times, as anything else. For cubes you can ignore hygrometers and relative humidity much of the time.
Mist as needed, rather than on a schedule. Watch surface conditions, rather than hygrometers and never fan.  It doesn't do anything good. The idea
is largely to have constant, slight passive air then sudden changes. The main thing though is that you have indeed been successful in growing your
own mushrooms, and have done what many will never do. Congratulations.

Thanks! I added a couple pictures to show the flat ones with fuzzy feet. Good to know the fuzzy feet isn’t a problem. (I was actually fanning thinking it might “fix” the fuzzy feet.

Yep, fuzzy feet aren't a problem. So long as surface conditions are good, as in not too dry, or on the other hand with pooling, large drops of water for long periods of time, then you can relax.

Wow those look amazing. I had some fuzzy feet off my last flush. After drying I didn’t even notice it.
