Lions Mane Grow Bags - Slowing Fruiting
    #28361671 - 06/16/23 02:19 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Quick question - I have gone from Lions Mane spore syringe through agar to brown rice, and finally now into bags of sawdust and wheat bran.

They started to fruit before the bag was fully colonised, so I have broken it up and shaken it around.

Given how keen the bags are to fruit, is it ok to put a couple of the bags in the fridge to slow them down, so that rather than having 4 bags of fruits in one go, I can have some fresh mushrooms in the coming days and then maybe get the other bags out the fridge to fruit in a couple of weeks?

Thank you!

Yeah I use the fridge to delay fruiting all the time! I have some H.erinaceus in there right now actually!

Keep an eye on that bag though, fruiting before full colonization can be a sign of contamination. Hopefully all is well and you have some beautiful fruits here soon.

I ran into the same issue my recent grow of lions mane. The blocks were colonizing on wired racks like recommended, but very slowly. Once hung up, they seemed to almost burst with mycelial growth that was noticeable with days.

My Theory why (in case you wondered ha): open for debate (desired actually)

-I'm guessing it has something to do with creating a more ideal, compact substrate (gravity packed). So by hanging the bags, the plastic becomes much more evenly snug around the substrate, collapsing any air pockets around and throughout the sawdust/substrate.

...Basically helping to create a more "homogeneous" substrate...compensating for the mistakes made from uneven mixing, uneven moisture content etc.  All these factors creating faster colonization. Anyhow, that's the logic I put behind what started as just a need for some more space for more bags. Also, I'm sure there are better ways to hang the bags lol....kinda goofy looking, but worked.

I just realized you didn't mention anything about slow colonization ha. Still, part of avoiding premature fruiting and/or contamination, would be to strive for the more ideal conditions that gravity gives to the sawdust bags when hung (according to my reasoning above).

I'm still new to giving advice on here, so yea ha.
